Tunisia have dismissed head coach Sabri Lamouchi following their heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and appointed experienced French manager Herve Renard as his replacement.

The decision was announced on Monday by the Tunisian Football Federation through the country’s public broadcaster.

According to the announcement, federation president Moez Nassari confirmed that an agreement had been reached with Renard to take charge of the national team through the remainder of the 2026 World Cup campaign.

“The president of the Tunisian Football Federation, Moez Nassari, announced that an official agreement had been reached with French coach Herve Renard for him to take charge of the national football team until the end of the 2026 World Cup,” the broadcaster reported.

Lamouchi, a former French international midfielder, had only been appointed Tunisia coach in January. However, the federation opted for a managerial change after the team’s disappointing start to the tournament.

The 5-1 defeat to Sweden on Sunday has significantly complicated Tunisia’s hopes of progressing from Group F, leaving the North African side under pressure ahead of its remaining matches.

Renard arrives with an impressive international coaching résumé and extensive experience in major tournaments.

The French tactician is widely recognised for leading Saudi Arabia to one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history when they defeated eventual champions Argentina 2-1 during the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Following his spell with Saudi Arabia, Renard went on to coach the France women’s national team, further enhancing his reputation as one of the most accomplished international managers in world football.

Tunisia will now hope that Renard can quickly inspire a turnaround in fortunes as they prepare for a crucial Group F encounter against Japan on Saturday.

With qualification hopes hanging in the balance, the Carthage Eagles face a must-win situation if they are to keep alive their chances of reaching the knockout stages of the tournament.

The federation will be counting on Renard’s experience, tactical expertise and history of producing results on the international stage to revive Tunisia’s World Cup campaign.
