Kwankwaso Announces Gwarzo as Kano NDC Governorship Candidate

Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso

National leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has unveiled Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso also confirmed that Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna would contest for the Kano Central Senatorial seat under the platform of the NDC.

The former Kano State governor disclosed the development in a statement shared on his official handle on Friday, explaining that the selections were made after extensive consultations within the party and key stakeholders of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

According to Kwankwaso, the decision was based on the principles of fairness, competence, loyalty, and equity, which he described as the foundation of the movement’s political ideology and internal unity.

“I am delighted to announce that His Excellency, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has been selected as our Kano NDC gubernatorial candidate for the upcoming elections,” Kwankwaso stated.

“Similarly, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna will contest for the Kano Central Senatorial Seat.”

He added that the party remained committed to promoting candidates capable of sustaining progress and strengthening political stability within Kano State.

“This decision was made in the spirit of equity, fairness, loyalty, and competence — values that remain central to our party and Kwankwasiyya’s progress and unity,” he added.

Kwankwaso also expressed optimism about the upcoming affirmation exercise and the party’s chances in the 2027 elections, praying for a peaceful and successful political process.

“As we proceed with today’s affirmation exercise, I pray for a seamless, peaceful, and successful process. May Almighty Allah grant us resounding victory in the forthcoming elections,” he stated.

Aminu Gwarzo is regarded as one of Kwankwaso’s closest political associates and previously served as Deputy Governor of Kano State under Governor Abba Yusuf.

Before becoming deputy governor, Gwarzo served as Commissioner for State Affairs during Kwankwaso’s administration and also held office as Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government Area.

He later resigned from his position as deputy governor following Governor Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Afterward, he joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside Kwankwaso before eventually moving to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Meanwhile, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna previously served as Deputy Governor of Kano State under former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Gawuna was also the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 Kano governorship election before recently aligning politically with Kwankwaso and joining the NDC.

Political analysts believe the latest endorsements by Kwankwaso may significantly reshape the political landscape in Kano State ahead of the 2027 elections, especially considering the influence of the Kwankwasiyya movement across the state.
