Ladies Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria, LPGAN, has restated its commitment to reposition golf as a sports of benefit to women golfers in the country, just like football and others.
The association made this known during a two-day training for sports journalists in Abuja.
A communiqué signed by its Legal Adviser, C.U Oparaugo at the end of the training, said it was designed to enhance the skills of sports journalists and media professionals in reporting on women’s golf in Nigeria.
The communiqué added that the training was aimed exposing the participants on golf terminologies and the rules that govern the game, effective techniques for crafting engaging stories and profiles of golfers, as well as highlight their personalities, challenges and achievements among others.
Speaking at the end of the training, Lady Pro Uloma Ogbuokiri said the programme was mainly for those who already have and those wishing to have a career in golf.
Lady Ogbuokiri added that it was also aimed at empowering ladies.
“The question is why are Nigerians not benefitting like others – Tiger Woods and many others — in sports? That is why LPGAN and other well-meaning Nigerians came together and put up this programme.
“We all know that what makes sports entertaining is the media. This is the first edition, the second one will hold in March next year,” Ogbuokiri disclosed.
Some of the personalities who graced the occasion include Lady Pro Tima Micah, Dame Julie Donli, Dr Lami Ahmed, Lady Pro Judth Sirri Obomanu-Assisi, Lady Christy Adejo and Mrs Victoria Ochuno.
