Suspected gunmen on Tuesday launched another deadly attack on Dorowa Babuje community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing two residents in the latest wave of violence to hit the area.
The attack reportedly occurred at about 1 p.m. when the assailants invaded the community and opened fire indiscriminately, sending terrified residents fleeing for safety.
A resident of the community, Mr. Alfred Bitrus, confirmed the incident to journalists, saying the attackers stormed the village in broad daylight and shot two people before escaping.
According to Bitrus, the victims were carrying out their normal daily activities when the armed men suddenly appeared and launched the assault without any provocation.
He described the attack as another tragic incident in a community that has repeatedly come under violent attacks.
Also confirming the incident, the Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders (BYM), Mr. Rwang Tengwong, condemned the killings and expressed concern over the continued bloodshed in Plateau communities.
Tengwong lamented that despite repeated attacks on innocent residents, many vulnerable communities across the state remain exposed to armed violence.
He called on security agencies to intensify efforts to track down those responsible for the latest attack and ensure they are brought to justice.
The BYM spokesman further appealed to both the Federal Government and the Plateau State Government to urgently strengthen security measures to prevent further attacks and guarantee the protection of lives and property.
According to him, residents have continued to live in fear due to recurring assaults by armed groups operating in the area.
The latest attack has once again renewed concerns over the security situation in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, which has experienced repeated incidents of violence in recent years.
Dorowa Babuje community has particularly suffered several deadly attacks.
In February this year, no fewer than 10 persons were killed when gunmen carried out coordinated attacks on the same community, an incident that attracted widespread condemnation from across Plateau State and beyond.
Residents had hoped that increased security deployments following the February killings would restore peace to the area.
However, Tuesday’s attack has further heightened fears that the perpetrators remain active despite ongoing security operations.
As of the time this report was filed, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the latest killings.
Efforts to obtain reactions from relevant security authorities were unsuccessful.
