Katsina State Universal Basic Education, SUBEB, is collaborating with the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, to strengthen teachers capacity for development and school support.
The six-day training which commenced in Katsina on Monday was organised under the Global Partnership for Education, GPE, funded Transforming Education System at State Level, TESS, initiative.
Speaking at the event, the National Programme Coordinator, Better Education Service Delivery for All, BESDA, Mr Aleshin Olumayowa, said 85 state master trainers of school support officers would benefit.
According to Olumayowa, the crucial training programme for designated project officers and School Support Officers, SSOs, embarked upon by the UBEC boss, Aisha Garba is aimed at reforming the basic education sub-sector.
He added that the exercise is aimed at enhancing teachers quality and support system in Oyo, Adamawa and Katsina, OAK, States.
“This initiative is a key component of the TESS programme, an Additional Financing, AF, provided by GPE to build upon the successes of the BESDA programme in these states.
“The TESS programme focuses on three critical result areas; reducing the number of out-of-school children, improving teaching practice and enhancing teacher deployment and education expenditure transparency.
”This current training directly addresses the second result area Disbursement Linked Indicator Area 2, DLI-2, by equipping key education stakeholders with the knowledge and skills to effectively support teachers through structured pedagogy methods and digital resources.
“The training programme is designed to familiarise participants with digitised teachers content, school support officers platform and the framework for supporting DLI 2,” he said.
In her keynote address, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Zainab Musa-Musawa, said the training is crucial and timely.
According to her, the training is not just another workshop, but a strategic step in the collective journey toward achieving Result Area two DLIs of the TESS Project.
Musa-Musawa represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Hajiya Ummukhair Bawa, explained that the project focused on enhancing literacy outcomes as a cornerstone for other forms of learning.
“As you all know, literacy is the bedrock of education. Without the ability to read, comprehend and express, our learners will remain trapped in cycles of underachievement.
“That is why this intervention is vital not only for the fulfillment of project indicators, but for the transformation of lives, schools and communities across Katsina State.
“The training of 85 State Master Trainers is a deliberate investment in building a pool of professional educators who will cascade best practices in literacy instruction to thousands of teachers across the state,” she said.
Meanwhile, the State Project Coordinator, TESS, Hajiya Binta Abdulmuminu, noted that the objectives of the training include exposure to digitised content and providing a thorough understanding of the digitised self-study content across four core subjects.
Abdulmuminu said other objectives include equipping officers with the knowledge of the monitoring and evaluation framework for participants, as well as the Education Management Information System, EMIS, platform for data collation.
She added that developing the skills necessary to effectively support the benefiting states in implementing the curated teacher content and SSO applications is part of the objectives. NAN
