As Nigerians continue to mourn the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, Dr Tony Ojukwu (SAN), yesterday, noted that he served the nation with full dedication and commitment.

Ojukwu, who reacted to the former president’s death in a statement on behalf of the governing council and management of the commission, described Buhari as a remarkable leader and elder statesman.

Expressing heartfelt condolences to his family, the government and people of Nigeria, the NHRC boss said “President Buhari will be remembered by the commission for his significant contributions to the advancement of human rights and the pursuit of justice in Nigeria.

“His administration strengthened the capacity of the commission by increasing its budgetary allocation and granting special intervention funds for the advancement of human rights.

“He also approved the National Action Plans for Business and Human Rights, as well as NAP for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, a clear demonstration of his belief in the promotion and protection of human rights for all Nigerians.”

He said equally notable was his commitment in ensuring relative peace and security in the North East, where relentless efforts under his leadership helped to reduce  insurgent threats and restore normalcy to most communities devastated by conflicts.

Ojukwu said at this moment of national mourning, NHRC prays that the Almighty grants his soul eternal rest and comforts his family and the entire nation.

He also prayed that Buhari’s patriotic service and sacrifice for the unity, peace and progress of Nigeria would never be forgotten.
