The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, has confirmed the death of two people following a road traffic crash involving a Lexus car and a motorcycle at the Leme area of Abeokuta.
The incident, which occurred on Monday evening, was attributed to excessive speeding, according to the FRSC.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed the details in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abeokuta.
Odunsi said the accident happened at about 5:45 p.m. and involved a black Lexus vehicle bearing registration number KJA 398 JR and a black TVS motorcycle with registration number AYT 837 QU.
According to him, six adult males were involved in the collision.
He confirmed that two of the victims lost their lives, while the remaining occupants escaped without sustaining injuries.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that excessive speed caused the crash.
“A total of six adult males were involved in the crash. Unfortunately, two adult males lost their lives, while no injury was recorded among the other persons involved,” Odunsi stated.
He explained that FRSC rescue personnel responded swiftly after receiving the distress call, arriving at the scene within five minutes to carry out rescue operations.
The victims were evacuated, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the State Hospital, Ijaye Mortuary, Abeokuta.
Odunsi added that officials also recovered personal belongings found at the accident scene, including an identity card and a Tecno mobile phone, before clearing the wreckage to restore normal traffic flow along the route.
Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Oludare Ogunjobi, sympathised with the families of the deceased over their loss.
He also urged motorists and motorcyclists to obey speed regulations and avoid reckless driving, stressing that excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of fatal road crashes.
“Motorists, especially drivers and motorcyclists, should strictly obey speed limits, remain vigilant and avoid dangerous driving behaviours.
“Speeding reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes,” Ogunjobi said.
The sector commander reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to improving road safety through continuous enforcement of traffic regulations, public enlightenment campaigns and prompt emergency response services.
He further encouraged members of the public to promptly report road crashes and other emergencies through the FRSC National Emergency Toll-Free Number 122 or by contacting the nearest FRSC patrol team.
