The Head of Protocol for the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championships, Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, has expressed Nigeria’s excitement at receiving the first group of athletes arriving for the continental event.
Athletes from the Democratic Republic of Congo touched down in the early hours of Saturday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, becoming the first international delegation to arrive for the championships scheduled to take place from July 16 to 20 at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta.
The Congolese contingent was warmly received by the LOC Protocol Subcommittee, led by Arabinrin Atoyebi, in a ceremony marked by Nigerian hospitality and efficient coordination. The smooth arrival process set a positive tone for what is expected to be a well-organised and memorable event.
Speaking during the reception, Atoyebi stated, “We are excited to receive the first set of athletes arriving for the championship. This marks the beginning of what promises to be a historic and unforgettable competition. Our protocol teams are fully mobilised at the airports to ensure a smooth and welcoming experience for all delegations, in line with the National Sports Commission’s mandate for excellence.”
With just four days to go, the build-up to the much-anticipated championships has officially begun. The African U18/U20 Athletics Championships will host elite young athletes from over 40 African countries, all competing for glory and national pride in what promises to be a vibrant showcase of talent and unity across the continent.
