Gombe State Police Command has arrested a 55-year-old ward head in Zambuk, Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area, for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl.
The state police spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi confirmed the arrest in a statement yesterday, identifying the suspect as Mohammed Tukur of Sabon Gari Village, Zambuk.
According to the police, the incident occurred on August 9 around 9pm when the suspect allegedly lured the victim, Zulei Malam Dahiru, to a secluded location where the offence was committed.
Upon receiving the report, operatives from Zambuk Division swiftly moved to the scene, rescued the victim and took her to the General Hospital, Zambuk, for medical examination.
The suspect was apprehended and taken into custody immediately.
DSP Abdullahi stated that investigation is ongoing and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensure justice for victims of sexual violence.
The Commissioner of Police, Bello Yahaya, condemned the act and called on residents to promptly report all incidents of sexual abuse to enable timely police intervention.
