The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has restated its prohibition of wild post-examination celebrations and other activities capable of disrupting peace and order within the institution, warning students that violators will face disciplinary action.
The renewed directive was issued by the university management ahead of the conclusion of the current examination period, with particular attention to final-year students who are expected to complete their academic programmes.
The Registrar of the university, Dr. Chukwuka Icha, conveyed the management’s position in a statement released on Monday in Calabar.
Icha expressed concern over the recurring trend of unlawful celebrations by some students, especially graduating students, immediately after writing their final examinations.
According to her, such celebrations are often characterised by reckless driving, the flying of colours and other forms of disorderly conduct capable of endangering lives and disturbing the peace on campus.
She urged all students, particularly finalists, to refrain from engaging in such activities and to comply strictly with the institution’s regulations.
“The ban on wild celebrations within the campus, around the school gates and all cult-related activities remain in force.
“The management will not hesitate to sanction any student or group found violating the directive,” she stated.
The registrar further disclosed that the Acting Chief Security Officer had been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the directive across the university campus and surrounding areas.
She appealed to all members of the university community to take note of the warning and cooperate with the authorities in maintaining a safe and orderly environment.
The management reiterated that preserving peace, protecting lives and safeguarding university property remain top priorities, stressing that every student has a responsibility to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the institution’s values.
The renewed warning follows a tragic incident that occurred in 2024 when final-year students celebrating the completion of their examinations were involved in a serious road accident within the university premises.
The incident, which occurred during an uncontrolled celebration after the students wrote their final paper, prompted the institution to strengthen enforcement of its ban on reckless post-examination activities.
