•He was a pillar of integrity, dedication – Emine
The atmosphere was heavy with grief on Friday as family members, colleagues, and friends gathered at the Christian section of the Gudu Cemetery, Abuja, to bid farewell to the late Morgan Omodu, Managing Editor of AljazirahNigeria Newspapers, who passed away on Thursday, October 16, after a brief illness.
The burial, attended by a cross-section of the media and civil society community in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, was described by many as a Mecca of mourners, as prominent journalists, activists, and public figures converged to honour the memory of a man widely regarded for his professionalism, humility, and commitment to truth.
Management and staff of AljazirahNigeria Newspapers turned out in large numbers, led by senior editors and department heads, to pay their last respects to their fallen colleague and boss. Many wept openly as the casket bearing Omodus remains was lowered into the grave, with prayers offered for the peaceful repose of his soul.
In a brief tribute, the Editor Weekend, George Emine, described Omodu as a pillar of integrity and dedication who gave his all to making AljazirahNigeria a household name. He added that the late editors leadership and mentorship left an indelible mark on the organisation.
Mr. Omodu was not just an editor; he was a big brother, and a moral compass to many of us, Emine said. His death is a huge loss, not only to AljazirahNigeria but to the media industry and the civil society space in Nigeria.
Several civil society leaders also paid glowing tributes, recalling Omodus long-standing engagement in advocacy and his commitment to social justice. Members of the Civil Society described him as a fearless voice who fearlessly spoke for the voiceless.
Family members and friends, visibly emotional, took turns to share memories of the late editor, who they said lived a life of quiet service and unwavering faith. A brief graveside service was conducted by clergy from his local church, who urged mourners to emulate Omodus legacy of integrity and compassion.
As the final dust settled on his grave, colleagues lingered in solemn reflection, exchanging words of comfort and recalling his calm demeanour and doggedness.
Late Morgan Omodu is survived by his wife, children, parents, siblings and relatives. He was aged 52.
Though gone, his legacy as an advocate for good governance will continue to inspire generations within and beyond the newsroom and the civil society.
