Buhari, aged 82, passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital after a prolonged illness. His remains, transported from London via a Nigerian Air Force aircraft, arrived in Katsina State on Tuesday for burial in his hometown of Daura.

The Federal Government declared Tuesday a public holiday and mandated that flags be flown at half-mast across Nigeria to honor the late former president, who served as military head of state from 1984 to 1985 and as civilian president from 2015 to 2023.
