House of Representatives yesterday expressed grave concern over the increasing number of unidentified security personnel manning checkpoints across the South East and South South regions.
This was parts of the resolutions reached yesterday by lawmakers in a motion of urgent public importance moved during plenary by Ibe Osonwa.
The House also directed its Committees on Police Affairs and Interior to immediately summon the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, and the commandant-general of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, to explain the persistent non-compliance with uniform standards by their operatives.
Again, lawmakers also directed its Committees on Police and Interior to immediately undertake oversight visits to the affected regions and report back to the House within six weeks for further legislative action.
Earlier, lawmakers described the development as a major national security threat that undermines public confidence and erodes citizens trust in law enforcement institutions.
They mandated the IGP and the commandant-general of NSCDC to immediately enforce strict compliance with existing regulations that require all officers on checkpoint, patrol and stop-and-search duties to be in full uniform with visible identification tags, names and ranks.
The resolution, they said aims to restore discipline, accountability and transparency within the security system.
