The National Working Committee, NWC, of the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, has officially ratified the emergence of former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The decision followed the completion of a review process conducted by the party’s Primaries Appeal Committee, whose report was subsequently examined and approved by the NWC.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Muhammed Ishaq.
According to Ishaq, the party leadership reviewed the outcomes of the recently concluded primary elections and upheld the results across several categories, including the presidential, governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly contests.
He stated that following the review, Donald Duke and other successful aspirants were cleared to represent the party in the 2027 elections.
However, the PRP nullified the primary election conducted for the Tarauni Federal Constituency seat in Kano State, citing issues that necessitated the cancellation of the exercise.
Apart from the affected constituency, the party affirmed the validity of all other primary election results and confirmed that the candidates who emerged from the process would fly the party’s flag during the forthcoming polls.
Ishaq said the party remained focused on strengthening its presence across the country and ensuring active participation in all levels of the electoral process.
He disclosed that the PRP would field a total of 420 candidates across various elective positions in the 2027 general elections.
“In line with our commitment to active participation in the electoral process, the PRP is proud to field a total of 420 candidates across all positions in the 2027 general elections,” he said.
The party spokesman noted that the approval of the candidates followed careful consideration of the appeal committee’s findings and recommendations.
He explained that the review process was designed to ensure transparency, fairness and compliance with the party’s internal guidelines governing the conduct of primaries.
According to him, the exercise reflects the PRP’s determination to strengthen democratic processes within the party and build confidence among members and supporters.
Ishaq reiterated the party’s commitment to promoting internal democracy and ensuring that all aspirants are given equal opportunities during its electoral processes.
He further stated that the PRP remains committed to providing Nigerians with credible leadership alternatives capable of addressing the country’s political, economic and social challenges.
The spokesman added that the party’s focus extends beyond winning elections, emphasizing that its goal is to provide transformative leadership that prioritises national development, accountability and good governance.
He expressed confidence that the party’s candidates possess the experience, competence and vision required to deliver meaningful change if elected into office.
The confirmation of Donald Duke’s candidacy marks a significant milestone for the PRP as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Duke, a former governor of Cross River State, is expected to lead the party’s presidential campaign as it seeks to expand its influence and compete with Nigeria’s major political parties.
With the conclusion of its primary review process, the PRP says it is now focused on mobilising support across the country and preparing its candidates for the electoral contests ahead.
The party also pledged to continue engaging stakeholders and strengthening its structures at the grassroots level as part of efforts to enhance its electoral prospects in 2027.
