From Owen Akenzua, Asaba

Delta State government has reiterated its commitment to to collaborate with federal agencies to promote moral values and attitudinal change among the citizenry.

Executive Assistant to the governor on Communication and Head of State Orientation Bureau, Latimore Oghenesivbe gave the assurance when he played host to the Director of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Mrs Tracy Ikolomi, in his office in Asaba.

Oghenesivwe disclosed that barely six months ago when he took over the mantle of leadership, the Bureau had collaborated with critical federal agencies including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and both institutions have agreed to address incidents of drug abuse by youths

He disclosed that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration had taken a bold step to rehabilitate victims of drug abuse by establishing a rehabilitation centre at Kwale in Ndokwa West Local Government Area for youths who courageously denounced drug abuse.

He equally explained that because of the interest that the governor has for youths, the state government would float a health scheme for students of higher institutions to access free health services, which, according to him, is in tandem with the ‘Opportunities for All’ in the governor’s ‘MORE’ agenda.

Oghenesivwe urged the National Orientation Agency to assist in publicising the achievements of the present administration in the media, even as he assured that the state Bureau of Orientation would continue to partner NOA for the promotion of moral values in parents and youths.

Earlier, Mrs Ikolomi underscored the importance of partnering the State Orientation Bureau, especially considering their shared responsibilities in sensitising the public on behavioral and attitudinal changes, even as she outlined the various programmes that the National Orientation Agency plans to implement, as mandated by its Director-General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu.

She explained that one of it is ‘Say No To CLHEEAN’ which is an acronym that stands for Crime, Lawlessness, Healthcare Inaccessibility, Education Deprivation, Environmental Degradation, Abuse of all forms and Narcotics, and ‘The Citizens Value Charter,’ which aims to address the issue of declining values among citizens, and government’s obligation and responsiveness.

Total Blackout, As Labour Shut Down National Grid

By ABAH ADAH, Abuja

Organised labour comprising Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, yesterday shut down the national power grid, following the commencement of an indefinite strike over minimum wage.

Announcing this in a statement issued by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN,  Ndidi Mbah, TCN said the shut down happened at about 2.19am yesterday.

According to TCN, at about 1:15am, Benin Transmission Operator under the Independent System Operations unit of TCN reported that all operators were driven away from the control room and that staff that resisted were beaten, while some were wounded in the course of forcing them out of the control room, and without any form of control or supervision, Benin Area Control Centre was brought to zero.

Other transmission substations that were shut down by the labour union include Ganmo, Benin, Ayede, Olorunsogo, Akangba and Osogbo Transmission Substations. Some transmission lines were equally opened due to the ongoing activities of the labour union.

On power generating side, power generating units from different generating stations were forced to shut down some units.

“Jebba Generating Station was forced to shut down one of its generating units, while three others in the same substation subsequently shut down on very high frequency. The sudden forced load cuts led to high frequency and system instability, which eventually shut down the national grid at 2:19am.

“At about 3.23am, however, TCN commenced grid recovery, using Shiroro Substation to attempt to feed the transmission lines supplying bulk electricity to Katampe Transmission Substation. The situation is such that the union is still obstructing grid recovery nationwide.

“We will continue to make efforts to recover and stabilise the grid to enable the restoration of normal bulk transmission of electricity to distribution load centres nationwide,” TCN said.

Labour had proposed N615,500 initially but as negotiations were going on between it and the federal government, it later dropped to N494,000, while government offered N60,000.

The groups, had on May 31, declared an indefinite strike, with effect from Monday, June 3, as the federal government refused to step up the bargain from N60,000, let alone accept the unions minimum wage proposal.

The concept of a minimum wage in Nigeria dates back to the 1950s. The late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as Premier of the Western Region, implemented the first minimum wage policy in 1954. Western Nigerian workers received a minimum wage that was double the amount paid their counterparts in other regions.

The first National Minimum Wage Law was enacted by President Shehu Shagari in September 1981, spurred by the advocacy of Nigerian Labour Congress led by Hassan Sunmonu. The law set a minimum wage of N125 per month, equivalent to approximately $204 at the time.

You’ve Been Committed To The Core Values Of Your Establishment – NCC Boss Lauds NYSC

0

The Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Aminu Maida, has commended the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, saying that the scheme has stayed true to the ideals for its establishment since 1973.

He noted that NYSC has played a vital role in fostering national unity by instilling values such as service to community, oneness and brotherhood of every Nigerian citizen regardless of cultural, ethnic or social leanings.

Maida stated this during his goodwill message at the opening ceremony of the NYSC legal officers workshop in Abuja on Monday.

“Legal Officers, be it in the public or private sector, are key stakeholders in any organization, being primarily responsible for the management of its legal affairs,” he said.

“A major part of this responsibility includes ensuring that the organization complies with relevant laws, policies and regulatory provisions. In order to ensure that this role can be performed effectively, the legal team must be knowledgeable about all relevant instruments guiding the operations of the organization.

“These instruments would typically include the specific policies and legislation which establish the organization as t well as other laws and policies, which impact on its operations/service delivery.

“Legal Officers should undergo training and capacity building to aid a firm understanding of the laws and policies setting up their organisations.

“Such programmes should also provide guidance on identification and understanding of stipulations of other relevant laws.

“It should be mentioned that management’s adherence to legal advice provided by Legal Officers is important as this ensures that the organisation is not adversely exposed to penalties, legal consequences such as lawsuits, and even reputational damage.

“The Commission once again commends the NYSC for organising this capacity building programme which will enhance the service delivery of its Legal Officers and by extension the NYSC as a whole.

“The entire nation has benefited immensely from the activities of the teeming population of youth corps members who daily add value to the operations of various businesses in various sectors thereby contributing to the growth of the economy.

“This valuable contribution is also felt in the communications industry and in the operations of the Commission as it carries out its mandate of the Nigerian communications industry.

“As duly noted by the NYSC, the Commission is a stakeholder in the data protection of citizens in Nigeria to the extent that it mandates its Licensees to protect the information of subscribers against accidental or improper disclosure (as provided in its Consumer Code of Practice Regulations, 2007).

“In the same vein, access to the personal data of subscribers is strictly regulated by the Commission as provided in the Registration of Communications Subscribers Regulations, 2022.

“The Commission and its Licensees are duty bound to ensure that subscribers’ personal data are safeguarded and cannot be released to a third party without the consent of the subscriber or the Commission.

“The Commission’s Legal Officers are charged with the responsibility of ensuring that these regulatory provisions on data protection of subscriber information are complied with and this is a typical example of ensuring compliance with statutory provisions.”

“We are here to tell you thank you for some of the things that you have done for workers in Edo State. Starting with the fact that on April 29, you invited us to commission a very befitting secretariat for the labour movement in Nigeria. On that day, everybody that came to that event will attest to the fact that it is one of the best,” he said.

In response, Governor Obaseki said one of his agenda is to build Edo as a tourist state where people would be told things that make the state outstanding in Nigeria, which include being the home of the labour movement.
