Cholera: NCDC Urges States To Intensify Measures

0

By Blessing Otobong-Gabriel

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, yesterday sounded the alarm on the outbreak of cholera, urging states to intensify measures to combat the spread of the disease.

With multiple states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, affected, NCDC is advocating improved access to clean water, proper sanitation and hygiene practices to prevent further cases.

Its Director-General, Jide Idris, who stated this at a press briefing yesterday in Abuja, added that states should set up rapid response teams to quickly identify and contain cholera outbreak.

According to him, “NCDC continues to advocate to state governments to prioritise action for solutions that ensure access to, and the use of safe water, basic sanitation and proper hygiene in communities.

He also advised “the activation of emergency preparedness plans to address enhanced surveillance efforts, potential flooding and displacement events, mosquito control efforts, elimination of breeding sites, establishment of cholera treatment centers and ORT centers.”

He appealed to states to avoid suppressing information, saying “Please send in your line lists of cases in a timely manner. The constitution of your rapid response teams, vaccination campaigns, check sewage and drainage systems, provision of water, tankers, treatment or rehabilitation of boreholes, emergency toilets and latrines.

“To ensure readiness and early control, NCDC is implementing preparedness measures which includes cholera readiness workshops conducted in the South West and North West to enhance preparedness and response capacity. Similar ones are planned for the South South, North East, and North Central zones in May”.

The NCDC boss informed that treatment protocols have been disseminated to all states with appropriate training, adding that 134 local government areas classified as hotspots have been prioritised for multisectoral intervention, including potential RRT deployment, risk communication materials reviewed and updated, and airing to commence immediately, weekly surveillance updates disseminated to relevant authorities and stakeholders, technical support to surveillance officers provided to support data harmonisation efforts.

He noted that 36 states and the FCT are currently being assessed for readiness to combat cholera outbreak and intra action review on cholera response will be carried out as at when due.

He explained that while new cholera cases remain relatively low, their spread across 30 states amid the rainy season underscores the need for sustained vigilance.

The NCDC boss called for intensified multisectoral collaboration, especially in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, WASH, to prevent further transmission and reduce mortality.

“Though recent decline in Lassa fever and meningitis offer hope, the rising risk of cholera demands renewed alertness. We urge all Nigerians, health workers and partners to stay vigilant, act early and follow preventive guidance”.

He said NCDC remains committed to leading a coordinated national response, working closely with state governments and partners to ensure timely support and regular updates.

He urged the general public to reduce the risk of cholera, by ensuring that water is boiled and stored in a clean and covered container before drinking, practice good personal hand hygiene by washing your hands frequently with soap under clean running water. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and clean water are not available, ensure that food is well cooked before consumption. Only consume raw food such as fruits and vegetables after washing thoroughly with safe water.

“After cooking food or boiling water, protect against contamination by flies and unsanitary handling; left over foods should be thoroughly reheated before ingestion. Persons with diarrhea should not prepare or serve food or haul water for others”.

He urged health workers to adhere strictly to the infection prevention and control protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment as needed, promptly report suspected cases to the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers in your state or local government area.

Over 33 million at risk

* Resurgence of insecurity poses serious threat

* More than 50%  of Nigerans living below poverty line – World Bank

Despite the biting economic hardship, Nigerians have been warned to hear up for an imminent food shortage which will be compounded by the resurgence of insecurity across states, DAVID MAXWELL writes.

With over 50% of Nigerians living below the poverty line, it goes without saying that the economic situation in the country is quite dire.

According to the World Bank, “Since 2018, the share of Nigerians living below the national poverty line is estimated to have risen sharply from 40.1 percent to 56.0 percent.”

The Cadre Harmonisé Report for October has forecast that at least 33.1 million people across 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, will face a food and nutrition crisis between June and August 2025.

This forecast is based on the CH Analysis Report, which was released on Friday in Abuja.

The analysis was carried out by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Food Programme, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, along with other partners.

The states affected include Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Gombe, Taraba, Katsina, Jigawa, Kano, Bauchi, Plateau, Kaduna, Kebbi, Niger, and Benue.

Additional states impacted are Cross River, Enugu, Edo, Abia, Kogi, Nasarawa, Kwara, Ogun, Lagos, Rivers, and the FCT.

According to the report, the projected figure includes 514,474 Internally Displaced Persons in Borno, Sokoto, and Zamfara.

It also revealed that around 25 million people across the 26 states and the FCT are currently experiencing food crises.

FAO Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Kouacou Koffy, called for urgent attention and a unified approach to address food and nutrition security in the country.

He stated, “With the concerted efforts of the government, CH stakeholders, and the international community, we can move closer to alleviating hunger and reducing suffering for Nigeria’s most vulnerable populations.

“We are facing unprecedented challenges affecting livelihoods and food and nutrition security globally, regionally, and nationally.”

Koffy said that Nigeria is experiencing a combination of shocks, including economic factors affecting the prices of staple crops and agricultural

commodities, climate-related events such as floods and droughts, and insecurity.

He explained that the goal of CH workshops is to analyse available food security data and contributing factors to identify populations and areas at risk of food and nutrition insecurity in the country.

According to him, these workshops also aim to propose appropriate measures to prevent or mitigate ongoing food crises.

He stated, “CH analysis is the most reliable and widely accepted early warning tool for humanitarian programming, food security, and livelihood response targeting, as well as for prioritising development programmes.

Key drivers of this impending crisis include insecurity, insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry, which have severely impacted households’ livelihoods and their ability to cope with shocks. Soaring food prices, reduced availability, and limited access to clean water exacerbate the situation.

*We have faced unprecedented times in the country and region, with multiple shocks affecting livelihoods and food security,” said Kouacou Dominique Koffy, FAO’s country representative, emphasizing the urgent need for action.

Recently there has been reported cases of the resurgence of senseless killings resulting in massacre and bloodletting in the North Central states of Benue and Plateau – two states known for their agrarian culture, with Benue State known as the food basket of the nation.

According to Amnesty International,

“In Plateau State, from December 2023 to February 2024, at least 1,336 people were killed. Of those killed, 533 were women, 263 were children, and 540 were men. Over 29,554 people were displaced, out of which 13,093 were children while 16,461 were women. Also, in mid January, at least 40 farmers were killed in an attack by suspected Islamist militants.

In Benue State, on April 10, two farmers were murdered by the marauders in Gwer West LGA.

Same day, three persons were killed at Mbasombo community also in Gwer East LGA, while the latest attack on Otobi Akpa in Otukpo LGA and the boundary with Nasarawa State claimed the lives of at least 13 persons, with several others declared missing.

Speaking to our reporter, Mr Husseini Dodo, a farmer based in Borgu in Niger State, said: “If you look closely, all these commities constantly being attacked in Niger, Plateau, Benue, Borno, Edo, Ebonyi, Enugu States etc, are all farming communities. So I think it is a deliberate move to starve the nation. What they intend to gain from this is best known to them, but I expect our military and other security agencies to resort to intelligence gathering so as to know why, and to nip it in the budget.”

Wike Frowns At ‘Sponsored Walkout’ By Rivers Women, Apologises To First Lady

BY Ismaila Jimoh, Abuja

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike has tendered an apology to the Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu over what he described as sponsored walkout on her carried out by a group of women in Port Harcourt yesterday.

The women group is believed to be loyal to the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

This is contained in a statement made available to journalists by the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Socia Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka in Abuja on Saturday.

The Minister, who apologised to the First Lady and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on behalf of the people of Rivers State, said “insult on anyone representing the First Lady of Nigeria in an event is a direct insult on the office of the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and as a leader in Rivers State, I apologize.”

It would be recalled that a group of women led by some sacked Local Government Vice Chairmen yesterday staged a workout during the Renewed Hope Initiative empowerment programme in Port Harcourt.

According to the statement, Wike who is currently in China on official engagement described the incidents as “very disturbing and embarrasing, ” Cautioning supporters of the suspended governor to desist from from ridiculing the state.

The Minister counselled the suspended governor to demonstrate honesty by being bold enough to tell President Tinubu, what exactly he wanted, rather than saying something today, and doing another thing tomorrow.

He said; “It is not enough to be visiting people to plead for peace, those who genuinely want peace work and act for it.

“These are the same people pleading for peace, but at the same time doing things that are contrary to what they are pleading for.

“How can you say you want peace and at the same time, you are sponsoring people to insult everyone, including the President and his wife?

“All those shenanigans won’t bring peace, and I am sure they know that, because they are not sincere with their up and down pleadings for peace.

“As for me and those who subscribe to my leadership, we condemn in totality that yesterday’s show of shame and we apologize to our First Lady for the embarrassing conduct of those few women who do not represent the characters and ideals of the people of Rivers State.”

Prof Mgbeke: Group Knocks Senator Natasha Over Alleged Plot To Truncate Democratic Governance

0

A group – Annang Union Foundation has expressed disdain following the revelation by Dr Sandra Duru (Prof Mgbeke) of the ‘many lies, mudslinging and coordinated falsehoods and tactics’ by the suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to tarnish the image of Nigeria’s Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The group also frowned at Prof Mgbeke’s report, which claimed that the purpose of controversy between both senators was a plan by Natasha to derail and truncate the government of President Bola Tinubu, calling it a “Yoruba Government.”

Recall that Prof Mgbeke, a US-based activist and media personality, had in a Facebook Live on Thursday night displayed phone call logs and WhatsApp conversations, alleging that Natasha offered her ₦200 million to publicly accuse Akpabio of sexual harassment and organ harvesting, associating him to the 2021 death of a young woman named Umoren.

Reacting to the revelation, the Anang Union Foundation in a statement co-signed by its President Adede Nsikak Affia, and Secretary-General Adede Adaha Etuk said, “We condemn in its entirety, the labelling of the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a “Yoruba Government” and call on all patriotic sons and daughters of Nigeria to flay such categorisation.

“The President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration came to power through the collective and majority votes of Nigerians across tribes, religion and cultures and it is therefore very wrong and treasonable to be labelled a “Yoruba Government.

“We view this statement as inciting, unpatriotic, insulting, repulsive, disgusting and intensely distasteful. We appeal to the Federal Government to take appropriate steps to call suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and her cohorts to order.”

The group emphasised that throughout the reign of President Muhammadu Buhari, no Nigerian of any tribe called it a “Fulani Government” or tried to stop it from having a second term, adding that, “what is good for the goose, is good for the gander.”

The foundation, therefore, said the actions, inactions and statements credited to Senator Natasha on the Tinubu-led administration were a direct invitation to chaos, disunity and war.

The Anang Union Foundation also condemned the alleged attempt by the Senator to ridicule the National Assembly and Nigeria in the international space. “We submit that suspended Senator “Natasha’s action is condemnable, unethical, unwarranted, unwholesome, preposterous, nauseating, rash and repugnant”

The group therefore commended Prof Mgbeke for her patriotism, truthfulness, courage and concern for Nigeria’s future and sheer audacity and revolutionary stance.

The group commended Senator Akpabio for showing leadership, being a man of peace and honour, and exhibiting maturity, passing a vote of confidence on him for coming out strong and undaunted in the face of such intimidation and tempest.

“We warn that people should not capitalize on the Senate President’s simplicity and compassionate disposition to tar and or malign our revered Leader, Chief (Dr) Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON. Like our people used to say: “Jak akpatre ntang unen ature ke edong” translated as: “let the last feather of the hen stops at the knees.” Enough is Enough!

“Any further distraction from any individual, groups or quarters would be faced with stiffed opposition. This is not the first Senate President and will not be the last.

“We call on all well-meaning indigenes of this country to rally round and ensure that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu government delivers on its mandate and serve its tenure till 2031,” the statement added.

Faction of  Labour Party, LP, loyal to Julius Abure said it will not be part of any coalition ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its National Executive Council, NEC, meeting held on May 2 at the party’s national headquarters, the faction said it would rather focus on rebuilding and strengthening its structures.

The communiqué was signed by Abure and the National Secretary of the party, Farouk Ibrahim.

“NEC declared that the party is not and will not be part of any coalition towards the 2027 general election,” part of the communique reads.

“The party will rather continue to rebuild, reposition, re-strategise, reconcile, strengthen, drive its programmes and policies, win more members towards winning the 2027 general elections.”

The party reaffirmed the validity of the 2024 national convention held in Nnewi on March 27, noting that the gathering followed due process.

The faction said a notice for the convention was issued to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on December 4, 2023 and that changes in date and venue were also duly communicated.

The council ratified the list of the ad-hoc delegates elected across the 36 states and the FCT, a decision originally taken at its NEC meeting in Asaba on March 20.

The party commended the Supreme Court for affirming the supremacy of political parties and validating decisions taken by recognised party organs in its April 4 ruling.

“NEC commends the apex court for standing on the sound principle of the supremacy of political parties and the sanctity and bindingness of decisions taken by the validly convened recognised organs as created by the party’s constitution,” the communique added.

The council reiterated support for the Abure-led National Working Committee, NWC, and expressed confidence in its ability to “lead the party to victory”.

NEC also congratulated George Moghalu, who emerged as the party’s governorship candidate in Anambra State, and called on residents to back him in the November 8 poll.

NEC extended an olive branch to aggrieved members and called for reconciliation in the interest of the party and the nation.

LP announced the constitution of a five-member disciplinary committee to investigate the alleged anti-party activities of the governor of Abia State, Alex Otti,  and other erring members.

The panel is chaired by Ayo Olorunfemi and has Umar Farouk Ibrahim as Secretary, with Kehinde Edun, Dudu Manuga and Callistus Ihejiagwa as members.

The committee has been given two weeks to submit its report.

Expired Visas: Leave Within 3 Months, FG Warns Foreigners

0
MINISTER-OF-INTERIOR

By Blessing Otobong-Gabriel

Federal government has again warned foreigners with expired visas to leave the country within three months or risk sanctions.

“Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, wishes to inform the general public that a window period of three months from May 1 to August 1 shall be granted to allow foreigners residing in Nigeria with expired visas to return to their home country voluntarily without penalty,” NIS spokesman, ACI Akinsola Akinlabi said in a statement yesterday in Abuja.

This is even as the service announced that from August 2, there will be a permanent ban on foreigners who overstay their visas for over 12 months.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, had at a meeting with the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association, NECA, in Lagos last month, announced a five-year entry ban for expatriates who overstay for six months and a 10-year ban for those who overstay for over one year. The ban would also come with a $15 daily fine from the exit date on the visa.

However, NIS, in a statement yesterday in Abuja, said those who overstay for one year and above would be blacklisted permanently.

“In addition to the introduction of the e-Visa, Nigeria Visa Policy 2025 now makes it mandatory for foreigners who overstay their visas to be liable to the following penalties (effective from August 2): Overstay Penalties (Effective from September 1): $15 per day; three months and above: $15/day + five-year entry ban; and one year and above: $15/day + blacklisting (permanent entry ban),” Akinlabi said.

He also said, as earlier scheduled, government has now rolled out an e-Visa Application System and Automated Landing and Exit Card, which became effective from May 1.

He said, “Following the 2024 review of Nigeria’s visa policy, the updated 2025 policy introduces an e-visa system with enhanced security protocols.

“The e-Visa application process is strictly online from end to end. Processing time for e-Visas will be 48 hours or less. The e-Visa application system introduces 13 visa types of Short Visit Visa SVV; details can be found on https://evisa.immigration.gov.ng/.

“Once approved, visas and QR codes will be sent electronically via the applicant’s email. Visa on Arrival will be officially discontinued as the new e-Visa takes off on May 1. Visas obtained through the e-Visa Channel are not extendable. Visa on Arrival already issued will remain valid until May 30.

“The current manual embarkation and disembarkation card has been replaced by an electronic landing and exit card via https://lecard.immigration.gov.ng/.

“Automated landing and exit cards have been introduced for inbound and outbound passengers into Nigeria.

“For inbound passengers (excluding Nigerians), the landing card must be duly completed online before boarding. For outbound passengers, the exit card must be duly completed online before departure.

“The exit card system is synchronised with the Visa Processing Centre and will automatically apply penalties, including visa bans, where applicable,” Akinlabi added.

Guardiola to take coaching break after Man City

0

Pep Guardiola says he will take a break from management after he leaves Manchester City, though he does not know when he will retire.

Guardiola signed a two-year contract extension in November, extending his stay at the club until June 2027.

By that time the 54-year-old will have been at City for 11 years – he spent four years as Barcelona manager before taking charge of Bayern Munich for three.

“After my contract with City, I’m going to stop. I’m sure,” Guardiola told ESPN, external.

“I don’t know if I’m going to retire, but I’m going to take a break.”

Speaking to Sky Sports on Friday, Guardiola clarified that he won’t necessarily leave City at the end of his current contract.

“I didn’t say I’m leaving now or at the end of season or the end of contract,” he said.

“I said when I finish my time here, be it one, two, three, four, five years, I will take a break.

“I won’t retire but I will take a break. What I am saying is when I am finished here I will take a break,”

Guardiola has overseen the most successful period in City’s history, with his side winning six of the past nine Premier League titles as well as the club’s first Champions League as part of a Treble in 2022-23.

This season City have failed to reach their previous heights and are currently fourth in the table with four games left to play.

“How I want to be remembered, I don’t know,” Guardiola said. “I want people to remember me however they want.

“All coaches want to win so we can have a memorable job, but I believe that the fans of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City had fun watching my teams play.

“I don’t think we should ever live thinking about whether we’re going to be remembered.

“When we die, our families cry for two or three days and then that’s it – you’re forgotten. In the careers of coaches, there are good and bad ones, the important thing is that the good ones are remembered for longer.”

City could still finish the season with silverware as they face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final on 17 May.

Court Sentences BRT Driver To Death For  Murder

0

Justice Sherifat Sonaike of  Lagos State High Court, sitting at  Tafawa Balewa Square Annex, has sentenced a Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, driver, Andrew Ominikoron, to death by hanging for the murder of 22-year-old Oluwabamise Ayanwola.

Ominikoron was arraigned on a five-count charge bordering on murder, conspiracy and rape, in connection with the death of Ayanwola, as well as the sexual assault of Dr Anosike Victoria and the rape of Maryland Ojiezelu.

Delivering judgment yesterday, Justice Sonaike ruled that the Lagos State government, which prosecuted the case, had successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

“For the death of  Ayanwola, you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy upon you,” the judge declared in her pronouncement.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The convict was tried on a five-count charge, including conspiracy, rape, murder and sexual assault, brought against him by the Lagos State vovernment.

According to the charges, the incident occurred on February 26, 2022 around 7pm, near  Lekki-Ajah Conservation Centre, Lekki-Ajah Expressway, Lagos.

The prosecution said  Ominikoron  forcibly had sexual intercourse with  Ayanwole before murdering her.

The offences contravened Sections 411, 223, 260, and 165 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The deceased was last seen on February 26, 2022 after she boarded a BRT bus driven by Ominikoron in the Ajah area of Lagos.

Her disappearance triggered widespread outrage and a city-wide search.

Her body was discovered nine days later on Carter Bridge, Lagos Island.

During the trial, the state called 11 witnesses who testified against the convict.

The convict, who opened his defence on October 17, 2024, denied raping nor killing Oluwabamise.

Ominikoron, who was led in his defence by his counsel, Abayomi Omotubora, told the court that he picked the late Bamishe at Chevron, and at Agungi, he picked three male passengers.

According to him, one of the male passengers was coming forward and he thought it was to pay him, but then the passenger threw something at his head and showed him a gun, asking him to cooperate.

Chelsea Will Give Liverpool  Guard Of Honour – Maresca

0

Chelsea will give Liverpool a guard of honour when they host the newly-crowned Premier League champions on Sunday at Stamford Bridge, manager Enzo Maresca said.

Liverpool sealed a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title last weekend when they took an unassailable 15-point lead over second-placed Arsenal with four games to spare.

Although there is no rule or obligation for clubs to give the champions a guard of honour, Maresca said his players would line up to welcome Arne Slot’s side ahead of Sunday’s contest.

“I think it’s a tradition, it’s something you have to do and we want to do. First of all, they won the league, so they deserve that, and hopefully we can be there (as champions) very soon”, Maresca told reporters.

“I don’t think we need that to understand how good it is to win the Premier League. We know that it’s something very nice.

“But for sure when you are there, probably in their mind (the players) are thinking ‘I would like one day to be there”,

Liverpool’s players will be allowed to shake their opponents’ hands after they were barred following their last title win in 2020 due to Coronavirus restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Then Liverpool had won the title with seven games to spare and every team they faced until the end of the season — Manchester City, Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, Burnley, Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle United — gave them a guard of honour.
