35 New Pilots Graduate From NAF Flying School In Kaduna

0

Chief of  Air Staff, CAS, Air Marshal Hasan  Abubakar, has called on the newly graduated Nigerian Air Force, NAF, pilots to see their flying certifications as a national duty, not just personal milestones.

He gave the charge yesterday at the combined graduation ceremony of Basic Transport Flying Course 5 and Ab-initio Student Pilot Course 49, held at  401 Flying Training School, FTS, in Kaduna.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Wapkerem Maigida, which was  made available to Defence Correspondents in Abuja.

While addressing the 35 new pilots—comprising 10 graduates of the Basic Transport Course and 25 Ab-initio Student Pilots—Air Marshal Abubakar reminded them of the heavy responsibility they now bear.

According to the CAS, “In the Nigerian Air Force, we say that the quality of our training determines the strength of our operations, this is why, under my leadership, we are upgrading training institutions, inducting more aircrafts and evolving our doctrines to meet the demands of modern warfare.”

It added that Air Marshal Abubakar described the graduation as another milestone in the ongoing transformation of NAF into a more agile, resilient and technology-driven force.

The CAS commended  401 FTS for over four decades of excellence in pilot training, during which it had produced more than 700 pilots for the NAF, Nigerian Navy and other African countries, including Republic of Benin, Cape Verde, Niger, Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone.

He reiterated NAF’s unwavering dedication to enhance professional capacity, improve personnel welfare and execute its constitutional mandate to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity, while supporting national development.

NCDC Confirms 832 Lassa Fever, Mpox Cases, 135 Deaths

0

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, has confirmed a total of 832 cases and 135 deaths from Lassa fever and Mpox as of Week 16 of 2025.

Its Director-General, Jide Idris, who disclosed this yesterday during a national health security briefing in Abuja, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguard public health through timely, transparent and accurate disease reporting.

Dr Idris  said surveillance and response efforts are ongoing in collaboration with state health authorities and partners to monitor disease trends and support affected states with rapid interventions.

“Cumulatively, as of epidemiological week 16, Nigeria has recorded 4,253 suspected cases of Lassa fever, with 696 confirmed and 132 deaths, representing a case fatality rate of 19 percent,” he said.

He noted that while there has been a steady decline in Lassa fever cases in recent weeks, particularly in week 16 ending April 20, the risk remains high, especially in endemic areas.

“These improvements reflect the positive impact of surveillance, treatment and community engagement. However, we must sustain and intensify our efforts,” he added.

Providing an update on Mpox, he stated that between weeks 1 and 16 of 2025, the country recorded 723 suspected cases across 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, with 136 confirmed in 27 states and the FCT.

“Sadly, we recorded three Mpox-related deaths; two in Week 10 in Abia and Ebonyi States, and one more recently in Rivers State involving a young male with advanced HIV and tuberculosis. This brings the national case fatality rate to 2.2 percent,” he said.

He explained that the Mpox epidemic curve showed multiple peaks in  suspected and confirmed cases, indicating sustained transmission. Most confirmed cases were concentrated in Nigeria’s southern and central regions.

He highlighted that the disease cuts across various professional groups, including students, traders, civil servants and healthcare workers, posing risks for both community and healthcare-associated transmission.

On Cerebrospinal Meningitis, CSM, Dr Idris reported a sustained decline in new cases and fatalities as of week 14, attributing the trend to enhanced surveillance, treatment and vaccination strategies.

“Though the outbreak remains serious, national and sub-national coordination, preparedness and vaccination efforts are helping to turn the tide. We will maintain this response until full containment is achieved and states fully implement their Incident Action Plans,” he said.

To curb the spread of these diseases, NCDC said it has activated a multi-tiered response strategy including Emergency Operations Centre for national and state-level coordination, with regular review meetings involving hotspot states and deployment of National Rapid Response Teams to strengthen local capacity.

The Centre also said that it has activated strategic distribution and pre-positioning of essential medicines, intravenous fluids, personal protective equipment, laboratory consumables and enhanced laboratory capacity at the state level and referral support to the NCDC National Reference Laboratory in Abuja and the Central Public Health Laboratory in Yaba, Lagos.

NCDC added that five Mpox testing laboratories have been optimised across Bauchi, Kano, Cross River, Rivers and Enugu States, with mentorship programmes underway to improve sample handling and result turnaround times.

Dr Idris added that ongoing coordination with state health teams ensures the timely adaptation of messaging based on community feedback. Epidemiological data, including age, geography and case incidence, are also informing vaccination strategies.

He revealed that a mortality review was being held regarding  Mpox-related deaths in Abia, Ebonyi, and Rivers States, noting that the interventions aim to strengthen the country’s outbreak response system and reduce preventable deaths.

2027: Buhari, Malami, Others Not Leaving  APC – Gov Sule

0

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule has dispel insinuations that former President Muhammadu Buhari, former Attorney General, Abubakar Malami, and others may leave the All Progressives Congress ,APC, before the 2027 general election.

This is in reaction to speculations that members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change ,CPC, bloc, were threatening to leave the APC for allegedly being sidelined by the current administration.

Sule stated this yesterday in Lafia at the grand reception in honour of the Secretary to the Government of Nasarawa State, Labaran Magaji, by the Association of Local Government of Nigeria ,ALGON, Nasarawa State chapter.

The Governor, while commending the achievements of the APC administration under President Bola Tinubu, noted that those trying to divide the ranks of the party have failed.

“There is nothing like taking CPC away. Our father, former President Muhammadu Buhari is CPC, no other person.

“When he says CPC is with you, CPC is with you and the day he says CPC is not with you, CPC is not with you. He keeps carrying his 12 million voters along with him anywhere he goes and he is not going anywhere from APC.

“Those trying to take away our good products from the APC will not succeed. They want to take Malami away, but let me tell you that Malami is going nowhere.

“That’s why we recently went to see Buhari in Kaduna and we said Baba you are not going anywhere.

“Malami sir, you are not going anywhere, we are going to build this house together”, Sule said.

Sule also revealed that 20 aspirants were already jostling for his position ahead of the 2027 election.

He maintained that he had no anointed candidate, saying that only God would decide who would succeed him as governor of Nasarawa State in 2027.

The Governor pointed that that his administration had laid a solid economic  foundation for the next administration to build upon, added that he would leave the state debt-free.

He said that the appointment of Magaji was due to his pedigree and excellent track record in public service.

In his remarks, Abubakar Malami, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, appreciated Gov. Sule for his foresight in appointing Magaji as SSG to drive his administration’s vision for the state.

He described Magaji as an all rounder, a technocrat per excellence, poised to drive Sule’s vision for a prosperous and united state through transparent governance.

Malami urged stakeholders to rally round Magaji to deliver on the administration’s vision for accountability, transparency and inclusive development in governance.

Also speaking, Alh. Safiyanu Andaha, Chairman of Nasarawa ALGON and Chairman of Akwanga Local Government Area, said the event was organised in solidarity with Magaji, given his proven record of excellent public service.

Andaha, who appreciated Gov. Sule for finding Magaji worthy of the appointment, also pledged their unalloyed support to the administration.

On his part, Magaji, appreciated the leadership style of Gov. Sule and his disposition towards the prudent and efficient management of the state’s resources for the benefit of the people.

He thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve in his administration.

NANS Declares Atiku Abubakar Isah Persona Non Grata Over False Accusations Against Seyi Tinubu

…Reaffirms Commitment to a United NANS and Unwavering Support for Tinubu Administration

Joel Ajayi

The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Olusola Oladoja, on Friday declared Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah—who claims to be the President of NANS—persona non grata over what he described as malicious and baseless allegations aimed at tarnishing the reputation of Mr. Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Atiku Isah had alleged that thugs loyal to Seyi Tinubu stormed The Wells Carlton Hotel in Asokoro, Abuja, wielding cutlasses and firearms, disrupting an event, assaulting attendees, looting property, and forcing dignitaries like Senator Ibrahim Shekarau and former Governor Idris Wada to flee. He further claimed the attack was politically motivated and linked to a bribe offer intended to silence his self-proclaimed leadership.

Addressing a world press conference in Abuja, Comrade Oladoja condemned these claims as part of a politically motivated smear campaign backed by certain opposition figures, whose identities he stated are known and would be revealed in due course.

“We have convened this briefing to address the malicious and baseless allegations propagated by Atiku Isah, who falsely claims to be the President of NANS,” Oladoja said. “His actions are part of an orchestrated campaign to sow discord within NANS and damage the reputation of Mr. Seyi Tinubu.”

Oladoja emphasized that Atiku Isah’s accusations are not only unfounded but also a desperate attempt to undermine the unity of Nigerian students and the credibility of the Tinubu administration.

“For clarity, NANS is united under legitimate leadership,” he continued. “On February 26, 2022, at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja, Nigerian students conducted a transparent, free, and fair election that duly elected me, Comrade Olusola Oladoja, as the National President, along with a full executive council. Atiku Isah, by contrast, operates without any elected executive backing his self-acclaimed presidency.”

He challenged Isah to seek redress through legal channels if he disputes the election outcome, adding that the records of the election and inauguration are publicly available and verifiable.

Oladoja dismissed the allegations against Seyi Tinubu as completely fabricated, noting the absence of specific details such as dates, credible witnesses, or verifiable evidence. He further claimed that intelligence and photographic evidence link Atiku Isah to opposition figures within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political entities.

“Seyi Tinubu is a private citizen known for his peaceful and constructive engagement with Nigerian youths. The idea that he would orchestrate any form of violence is both absurd and inconsistent with his well-documented character,” Oladoja stated.

Reaffirming NANS’s support for President Tinubu’s administration, Comrade Oladoja said: “NANS, under my leadership, firmly supports the administration’s commitment to youth and student welfare. We are students, not politicians, and our focus remains on championing the rights and interests of Nigerian students.”

He called on the public, media, and relevant authorities to disregard Atiku Isah’s claims and urged security agencies to investigate the sources of his funding and the political forces behind the campaign of misinformation.

“NANS will not be distracted by such antics,” he concluded. “We remain committed to working with the Tinubu administration to promote education and youth development in Nigeria. Atiku Isah’s lies will not prevail; truth and justice will.”

Nigeria’s Multi-party Democracy Bedrock Of Political Stability, Says  Gbenga Hashim

0

Renowned political leader and presidential hopeful, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has renewed the call for the defense and preservation of Nigeria’s multi-party democratic system, describing it as the bedrock of national unity and political stability.

He made this call during a courtesy visit to his Abuja office by State Chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP, from the North-Central zone.

The delegation was led by Barrister Tanko Beji, Chairman of PDP in Niger State and the current Coordinator of PDP State Chairmen in the zone.

During the discussion, Dr. Olawepo- Hashim averred that “Our democracy is strongest when it accommodates diversity of thought and representation”.

He added that “the strength of Nigeria lies in its plurality, and we must jealously guard the legacy of multiparty democracy bequeathed to us by our founding leaders”.

He lauded the visit as a positive indication of the growing need for cross party engagement in consolidating democratic ideals, especially in an era marked by political polarisation.

Dr. Olawepo-Hashim, a former presidential candidate widely regarded for his centrist philosophy and advocacy for peace, reiterated his belief in an inclusive democratic Nigeria, one in which governance reflects the aspirations of all citizens, regardless of their political background.

Discussions at the meeting focused on Nigeria’s democratic trajectory, with particular emphasis on the importance of safeguarding the country’s multiparty character as a defense against authoritarianism and political exclusion.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Barrister Tanko Beji praised Hashim’s unwavering commitment to national unity and democratic values, noting that the visit transcended party politics.

Barrister Beji added that “We are here to encourage conversations that go beyond political divides”.

According to him, “What unites us as Nigerians is far greater than our political affiliations”.

The meeting concluded with a shared call for political leaders across the spectrum to rise above partisanship and protect Nigeria’s democratic space from being narrowed or dominated by any single interest.

Tinubu: NANS Leader’s Allegations Are Fallacious, Unfounded — Afenifere

0

By Caleb Ishaya

Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has refuted the allegations levelled by a factional President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Atiku  Isah, against Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.

In a  statement signed by its National Organising Secretary, Abagun Kole Omololu, Friday, Afenifere labelled the accusations as “salacious, fallacious and completely unfounded.”

The organisation accused Isah of attempting to mislead the public with baseless claims and warned against using student platforms to peddle falsehoods and sow discord.

The group also questioned the legitimacy of Isah’s leadership within NANS, adding that his allegations against Tinubu are politically motivated.

The statement reads, “The attention of Afenifere has been drawn to claims by  Atiku Abubakar Isah, a factional President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, who has made  some salacious and fallacious accusations against Seyi Tinubu.

“First, this individual apparently has a political motive, as clearly seen in the banner he hoisted outside the venue of his supposed inauguration.

“That banner proudly displays the photos of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi and other prominent members of the so-called anti-Tinubu coalition.

“This is prima facie evidence that Isah is being sponsored by the political enemies of Seyi’s father and will, therefore, say anything to tarnish the president, which is what he is doing by attacking the son.”

The group also slammed Isah for linking his ordeal to the president’s son without concrete evidence to back up his claim.

“The obvious conclusion that the public should, therefore, draw is that this is a proxy war against the president, his government and his family by surrogates of the coalition of strange bedfellows cobbled together not for the benefit of Nigeria, but to seize power by any means necessary, including sponsoring a vocal local actor like Isah to throw arrows that they are too cowardly to throw using their own names,” Afenifere said.

These tactics “are going beyond descent and civilised politicking,” the group warned.

Terrorism: Kanu Wasn’t Arrested With Any Weapon –  Witness

Trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, on Friday continued before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Department of State Services, DSS, through its witness, told the court that on October 14, 2015, when Kanu was arrested in a hotel at the Lagos International Airport, no weapon of terrorism was found on him.

Giving his evidence under the codename PWAAA, his identity shielded for security purpose, the witness admitted that most of the items found with Kanu were his personal belongings, among which included materials for radio broadcast.

The witness, a DSS operative, however, insisted that though the recovered items may not be ordinarily harmful, he said their intended usage by the defendant could be a source of problem.

While being cross-examined by Kanu’s legal team led by a former Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Kanu Agabi, SAN, the witness listed the items recovered to include: one black laptop, two multi mix transmitters, one mini white Apple iPad with pouch, one grey Apple iPad with pouch, one grey MacBook with pouch, one grey MacBook with case, one mini drone sound wave speaker, two mini white speakers, one large computer mouse, one white adaptor, one laptop adaptor and one carton bag with laptop among others.

The recovered items, which were brought before the court in four suitcases, were earlier admitted in evidence and marked as exhibits by Justice  Omotosho.

Answering questions during the cross-examination, the witness, admitted that he did not analyse any of the items, as he was only mandated to arrest the defendant and obtain his statement.

Though PWAAA admitted that Kanu’s phones were eventually analysed, he said the report of the analysis was not tendered before the court as it was not considered important.

The witness admitted that at the time Kanu’s statement was obtained, none of his lawyers were present to observe the process.

Wjen asked if he was aware of other persons also facing trial over Biafra agitation, the witness answered in the negative, saying he does not know any person that is facing a similar trial as Kanu.

He, however, told the court that he is aware that  Simon Ekpa has been arrested and would soon be brought back to Nigeria to face trial for supporting Kanu’s agitation.

He also told the court that he could not remember any time that Kanu complained about corruption in high places, high unemployment rate among youths or when he tendered apologies for insulting the president and Igbo leaders.

Fake News, Misinformation Impacting Society Negatively — Reps

Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Akintunde Rotimi (APC, Ekiti), said on Friday that Artificial Intelligence, AI, generated fake news and misinformation poses serious threat to freedom of the press and impacting negatively on the society.

He, however, spoke of the need to put in place, a regulatory framework for the operation of AI in the country, while saying the House has already set motion in place  to pass a law that will ensure such regulations.

Speaking at a one-day event organised by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development in Abuja, Rotimi said the rise of AI-generated false news is not just a theoretical concern; it is a reality that has already begun to impact societies globally, especially the widespread use of deepfake technology and AI-generated content during political elections in Africa.

He said the event presents the opportunity to collectively reflect on the challenges and triumphs of the press and  recommit to upholding the very tenets of free expression, public accountability and democratic governance, that are fundamental to the advancement of civil society.

He commended the courage of journalists to challenge the status quo, expose injustices and amplify marginalised voices which remains indispensable to the health of any democracy.

“Misinformation has been deliberately crafted, with AI tools creating fabricated videos and articles designed to manipulate public opinion. In some instances, these false narratives have resulted in violence, public unrest and fractured communities.

“The ability of AI to create convincing, but entirely fabricated news stories has increasingly contributed to public disinformation and erosion of trust in both media institutions and democratic processes.

“The growing potential for falsehood to outpace truth presents a dire challenge. Misinformation campaigns can now be automated and scaled at an unprecedented rate, reaching millions in a matter of seconds.

“This makes it harder to distinguish fact from fiction, particularly when such fabricated news is designed to appear legitimate. The consequences can be far-reaching – undermining public trust, inflaming social divisions and even destabilising governments”.

He added that “as we stand at the crossroads of human editorial judgment and algorithmic decision-making, we are faced with an important philosophical and practical dilemma: How do we preserve the integrity of journalism in a world increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence?

Rotimi said “technology is a tool, not a conscience. In the face of rapid advancements, AI has proven capable of generating grammatically perfect articles, composing music and processing vast amounts of data with breathtaking speed. But what it cannot replicate is moral clarity, human empathy or the moral courage to challenge power; all of which lie at the core of the journalistic vocation.

“Artificial intelligence undeniably offers great promise, such as accelerating reporting, enhancing verification, and broadening the scope of dissemination. However, it also introduces risks: the amplification of biases inherent in flawed training data, the erosion of editorial independence through automated processes, and an alarming surge in misinformation that can outpace truth itself.

Speaking on the freedom of the press, he said “press freedom remains under constant threat. In the United States, Pew Research Center survey conducted between April 1 and April 7, 2024 released ahead of the World Press Freedom Day, explored Americans’ perceptions of press freedom and found that: 41 percent of  adults expressed being extremely or very concerned about potential restrictions on press freedoms.

“In Nigeria, our circumstances are similarly fraught. Security agencies have, on occasion, engaged in actions that limit the freedom of the press, especially against print and digital platforms. Simultaneously, the unchecked rise of fake news, character defamation, cyberbullying, and politically motivated disinformation continues to erode trust in the media and fuels demands for more stringent digital regulation.

“As spokesman of the House, I have seen firsthand, how journalistic shortcuts seeking virality over veracity can do more harm than good. I have witnessed instances where serious accusations were made against the House of Representatives without any corroborating evidence or a genuine attempt to verify the facts.”

FG Commences Implementation Of E-visa Regime

0

Federal government has commenced the implementation of the e-visa regime, which was rolled out on Thursday, May 1.

It insisted on penalties for those who stay beyond the number of days approved for them by the authorities.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, Akinsola Akinlabi, noted that the implementation would begin with two innovative solutions.

Akinlabi, a Deputy Controller of Immigration, listed the innovations as the e-visa application system and the automated landing and exit card system.

He said the innovations and ongoing reforms in the Nigerian Immigration Service align with the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of President Bola Tinubu to attract foreign investment and improve national security.

Akinlabi said:” Following the 2024 review of Nigeria’s Visa policy, the updated 2025 policy introduces an e-Visa system with enhanced security protocols.

“The e-Visa application process is strictly online from end to end. Processing time for e-Visas will be 48 hours or less.

“The e-Visa application system introduces 13 Visa types of ShortVisit Visa, SVV, details can be found on https://evisa.immigration.gov.ng/

“Once approved, visas and the QR codes will be sent electronically via the applicant’s email.

Visa on Arrival will be officially discontinued as the new e-Visa takes off on 1st May 2025.

“Visas obtained through the e-Visa channel are not extendable.

“In addition to the introduction of the e-Visa, Nigeria Visa Policy 2025 now makes it mandatory for foreigners who overstay their visas to be liable to penalties effective from 2nd August 2025.

“The current manual embarkation and disembarkation card has been replaced by an electronic landing and exit card, via https://lecard.immigration.gov.ng/

“Automated landing and exit cards have been introduced for inbound and outbound passengers into Nigeria.”

Akinlabi, however, said  NIS has introduced a window period of three months from May 1 to August 1 to foreigners residing in Nigeria with expired visas to return to their home country voluntarily without penalty.

Police Arrest 15 Suspects, Recover 21 Stolen Cars In Abuja

0

Commissioner of Police, CP, on the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Ajao Adewale, said Friday that operatives of the command arrested no fewer than 15 suspected car thieves and recovered 21 stolen vehicles.

Adewale, who addressed journalists at the command headquarters, said out of the recovered vehicles, six have been returned to their rightful owners after due verification.

He explained that operatives of the command attached to Central Police Station, CPS on April 11, while on routine patrol around the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission, Central Area, intercepted a Toyota Camry 1999 model being driven suspiciously by  Hassan Bukar.

The CP noted that upon sighting the operatives, the suspect attempted to evade arrest, but was promptly given a hot chase and was subsequently arrested.

Preliminary investigation, according to the commissioner, revealed that the vehicle was stolen from the premises of the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission and belonged to  Samson Otijede.

“The suspect confessed to having removed the vehicle with the intention of reselling it to his usual buyer in Kaduna State,” he stated.

He added that a bunch of master keys used for car theft were recovered from the suspect.

“The suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court at the conclusion of investigation,” he said.

Similarly, the commissioner said  on April 10,  Daniel James of Churchgate Tower, Central Business District reported at Central Police Station that his Toyota Camry 2011 model handed over to his mechanic, Abdulazeez  Salisu was stolen.

After several failed attempts to reach Salisu and retrieve his vehicle, James reported the matter to the police.

“Detectives from  Central Police Station swung into action and traced the vehicle to  Alex Lucky Ologhosele in Gwarinpa, who had purchased the stolen vehicle from the said mechanic.

“The suspect was apprehended and the vehicle was recovered. Efforts are still ongoing to arrest Abdulazeez who is currently at large,” the CP said.

In another development, Engr Lawal Abdulrasheed of the Ministry of Regional Development reported at Central Police Station that his official Hilux vehicle, white in color with Reg. No. KWL 615 DP, was driven away by his official driver, Abubakar Sadio.

“In a coordinated operation, police operatives tracked the stolen vehicle to Kaduna State, where it was recovered in the possession of the said  Saidu who was attempting to sell it.

“Another Toyota Hilux without registration number was also recovered at the scene. The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations,” he said.

The commissioner also stated that on April 28,  operatives attached to Life Camp Area Command responded to a report from a car buyer in Life Camp over a suspicious black colour Mercedes Benz 4matic E-400 with Reg. No. AAA 07 KA, which was about to be sold to him by five persons.

“Police detectives were promptly dispatched to the scene.

“Five suspects including: Suleiman Idris, Isyaku Habibu, Ganiyu Sadiq, Idowu Akintunde and Bello Muyideen were arrested. Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was stolen from its original owner in Lekki, Lagos State.

“The vehicle was recovered and the suspects are in custody. They will be charged to court on  conclusion of investigation,” he said.
