Ogun: NLC Embarks On Strike, Demands Dialogue With Govt

From Segun Ayinde, Abeokuta

Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ogun State chapter has embarked on indefinite strike over unpaid wage arrears, poor working condition, as well as unfulfilled agreement between the workforce and the state government.

This is just as the congress demanded a dialogue with Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration to resolve unmet demands and other grievances.

NLC’s leadership, at a resolution reached at the General Parliament of Ogun State Civil/Public Service Workers, held in Abeokuta, the state capital yesterday, directed its workforce to down tools until further notice.

Both the NLC State Chairman, Comrade Hameed-Benco Ademola, and State Secretary, Comrade Christian Omoneh, had in a statement, ordered all workers to withdraw their services with the state government until they are notified to resume work.

Congress sounded a note of warning to the workers that failure to obey the directive of its leadership on industrial action would attract consequences, urging government to “as soon as possible call for dialogue” to address their concerns.”

“We shall continue to keep you updated on further developments. Workers that are united can never be defeated. Solidarity forever,” the statement noted.

In recent months, NLC has continued to express growing discontent  over several pressing issues including unpaid wage arrears, subpar working conditions and government’s failure to honour agreements with labour unions.

Stakeholders are now calling on both sides to resume talks to promote industrial peace and ensure uninterrupted public services.
