The ultra-modern, FIFA-standard mini stadium built by the President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, has successfully passed a major test following the conclusion of the 2025 Onicha Olona Unity Cup, held at the facility in Onicha Olona, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The state-of-the-art sporting complex, complete with tartan tracks, hosted the annual grassroots football tournament, drawing football enthusiasts, community leaders and young talents from across the area. The facility earned widespread commendation for its quality, functionality and suitability for competitive sporting events.
Speaking at the event, Ochei explained that the project was driven by a strong desire to provide quality sports infrastructure at the grassroots, while also complementing government efforts to expand access to modern sporting facilities nationwide.
According to him, the mini stadium is equipped with standard fans’ barricades, an efficient drainage system, covered spectators’ stands and other modern features designed in line with international best practices.
Ochei disclosed that although the facility is already fully functional, it will be officially inaugurated in 2026. He noted that the stadium is expected to serve as a training hub for young football talents, local league teams and potentially national teams.
“This stadium is about giving young talents the right environment to grow. When quality infrastructure is provided at the grassroots, it creates opportunities, builds hope and lays the foundation for future champions,” Ochei said.
The NTF president also assured that the federation’s board is fully prepared for the 2026 Davis Cup, scheduled for February, expressing confidence in his administration’s broader vision to reposition tennis in Nigeria.
He urged members of the Nigerian tennis community to remain optimistic, stressing that his well-articulated plans would drive sustainable growth and elevate the sport both locally and internationally.
The tournament climaxed with a thrilling final as Ogbekenu Quarters edged Ogbe-Obi Quarters 3–2 in a pulsating encounter to emerge champions of the 2025 Onicha Olona Unity Cup.
Ogbekenu Quarters carted home the star prize of ₦3 million, bringing the competition to a colourful and celebratory close.
The successful hosting of the Unity Cup further reinforced the readiness and impact of the ultra-modern mini stadium, underscoring Victor Ochei’s commitment to grassroots sports development and youth empowerment.
