The United States government has introduced a new requirement compelling all visa applicants from Nigeria and other countries to provide details of their social media activity over the past five years.

According to an update shared by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria on its official X handle, applicants must list every username or handle they have used on any social media platform when completing the DS-160 visa application form.

The Mission explained that this policy is part of broader U.S. security and vetting measures aimed at strengthening background checks and curbing potential threats. It warned that any omission or misrepresentation of information could have serious consequences.

The statement read: “Visa applicants are required to list all social media usernames or handles of every platform they have used from the last 5 years on the DS-160 visa application form.

“Applicants certify that the information in their visa application is true and correct before they sign and submit. Omitting social media information could lead to visa denial and ineligibility for future visas.”
