FROM ONYEKACHUKWU MELUWA, Port Harcourt
Yet-to-be-identified man has reportedly died in a brothel along Azikiwe Street, Mile 2, Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, shortly after an altercation with a hotel attendant.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening, threw the entire area into confusion as other customers and workers in the brothel fled in panic.
Eyewitnesses told AljazirahNigeria that the man had checked into the brothel to meet with some commercial sex workers when he got into an argument with one of the attendants over an undisclosed issue.
According to one of the sources, the disagreement became heated and moments later, the man was said to have slumped inside the brothel before help could reach him.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but doctors on duty confirmed him dead on arrival.
The sudden death of the customer reportedly caused tension among workers and residents of the area, as police officers stormed the scene to restore calm and begin investigations.
Confirming the incident yesterday, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, for thorough investigation.
She disclosed that one male suspect has been arrested in connection with the death and is currently being interrogated by operatives at the SCID.
It was gathered that several commercial sex workers who usually operate around the brothel fled the area after the incident, apparently to avoid police questioning.
SP Iringe-Koko assured that detectives are working to unravel the actual cause of death and bring any suspect found culpable to justice.
