NBA legend LeBron James has officially decided to leave the Los Angeles Lakers but will continue playing in the league, bringing an end to his eight-year spell with the franchise, according to reports on Tuesday.
The 41-year-old, who remains the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, informed the Lakers that he would not be returning for another season and intends to play his 24th NBA campaign with a new team.
The development was confirmed by James’ longtime agent, Rich Paul, in comments to ESPN.
James, affectionately known as “King James,” became a free agent after the Lakers were eliminated in the second round of the NBA playoffs, ending speculation over whether he would retire or extend his historic career.
According to ESPN insider Shams Charania, the veteran forward chose to notify the Lakers ahead of the official opening of free agency as a sign of respect for the organisation.
“James chose to inform the Lakers well before start of free agency tonight out of courtesy and appreciation for their run together, and to allow LA to conduct its offseason business,” Charania reported.
The decision confirms that James has no plans to retire and will continue one of the most decorated careers in basketball history.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest players to ever play the game, James has won four NBA championships and holds numerous league records, including becoming the highest scorer in NBA history.
His departure also closes a memorable chapter in Los Angeles, where he guided the Lakers to the 2020 NBA championship and restored the franchise to title-winning status.
With the free agency negotiating window opening on Tuesday night, attention has already shifted to where James could land next.
Reports have linked him with a possible return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the franchise where he began his NBA career and later delivered its first-ever championship in 2016.
Another potential destination is the Miami Heat, where James captured two NBA titles during a highly successful four-year stint between 2010 and 2014.
There has also been growing speculation that the four-time NBA champion could join forces with his longtime friend Stephen Curry at the Golden State Warriors, creating what would be one of the most anticipated partnerships in league history.
Although no decision has yet been announced regarding his next destination, James’ availability instantly makes him the biggest name on the free-agent market.
His move is expected to reshape the balance of power across the NBA, with several championship contenders likely to pursue the veteran superstar as they prepare for the 2026–27 season.
Despite entering his 24th year in professional basketball, James continues to perform at an elite level, extending a remarkable career that has redefined longevity and consistency in the NBA.
