Renowned philanthropist and long-time supporter of sports development, Mr. Kingsley James Awodi, has been elected President of the Para Powerlifting Federation of Nigeria.
In an election held at the VIP Lounge of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, Awodi recorded a landslide victory, polling all 12 votes cast to emerge as the new president of the federation.
For the position of Vice President, Patrick Akutekwe also secured a unanimous victory, polling all 12 votes cast.
Speaking shortly after his election, Awodi pledged to reposition para powerlifting in Nigeria by leveraging the expertise of seasoned professionals and harnessing emerging talents from across the country and beyond.
He assured stakeholders that his administration would prioritize strengthening the federation, enhancing athlete development, and sustaining Nigeria’s dominance in international para powerlifting competitions.
“I am deeply honoured by the confidence reposed in me to serve as President of the Nigeria Para-Powerlifting Federation,” Awodi said.
“I congratulate my fellow board members on our election. This is a call to national service, and I look forward to leading an inclusive board where everyone will be carried along as we work collectively to move our federation forward.
“I sincerely appreciate the National Sports Commission for creating the enabling environment that made this election possible. We look forward to working closely with the Commission to ensure the continued growth of our sport.
“Our administration will be intentional in discovering and developing new talents through the organisation of more Para Open Trials, especially as some of our current athletes are nearing the later stages of their careers. Our objective is to continue producing world-class athletes who will make Nigeria proud on the global stage.
“Most importantly, we are committed to introducing impactful reforms that will positively transform the lives of our athletes and further strengthen the federation. We will also focus on bringing in fresh talents who will continue to fly Nigeria’s flag proudly across the world.
“I seek the support and cooperation of all stakeholders as we work together to drive greater growth and development of para powerlifting in Nigeria.”
