The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended four of its members for three months over allegations that they spearheaded moves to impeach the Speaker, Hyacinth Dajoh.
The lawmakers affected by Friday’s decision at plenary are Alfred Berger, who represents Makurdi North and serves as the House spokesman; Cyril Ekong of Oju II; Abu Umoru of Apa; and Shimawua Terna of Kyan Constituency.
The suspension comes amid heightened political tension within the Assembly, where internal divisions have been simmering since Dajoh assumed the speakership. Observers say the latest crisis underscores the fragile balance of power and competing interests among members, with some legislators reportedly dissatisfied with the Speaker’s leadership style and alliances.
Following the suspension, the Assembly quickly moved to rejig its leadership structure. Kennedy Angbo was named the new Deputy Majority Leader, Douglas Akya became Deputy Chief Whip, while Elias Audu replaced Berger as spokesman of the House.
In a bid to continue its legislative duties despite the row, the House also commenced screening of five commissioner nominees presented by Governor Hyacinth Alia. Two nominees — Ogwu Odeh and Imojime Tiza — are expected to be screened at a later date.
