The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that flooding has so far affected 19 states across Nigeria, with women and children accounting for the majority of the victims.
According to data released Friday via the agency’s dashboard, over 119,000 persons have been impacted by the disaster. Among them, 165 people have lost their lives, 82 remain missing, and 138 others have sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The most affected states, according to NEMA, include Imo, Rivers, Abia, Borno, and Kaduna, where the numbers of displaced persons and destroyed infrastructure remain significantly high.
“138 persons sustained various degrees of injuries, 43,936 displaced, 8,594 houses affected and 8,278 farmlands destroyed across 43 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 19 States,” the agency disclosed.
Further breakdown reveals that 43,936 people have been displaced, 8,594 houses damaged, and 8,278 farmlands destroyed across 43 Local Government Areas in the 19 affected states.
The states impacted by the flood include Abia, FCT, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ondo, Rivers, and Sokoto.
NEMA has reiterated calls for proactive disaster preparedness and collaboration among stakeholders to mitigate further impact as the rainy season continues.
