The Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London at the age of 82.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Magdalene Ajani, and follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s earlier proclamation of a seven-day national mourning.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo described Buhari as a leader of integrity who served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, and said the holiday was intended to allow Nigerians reflect on Buhari’s impact on governance, democracy, and national development.

“The holiday is a mark of respect for the late President’s service to the nation, his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, and his enduring legacy,” the minister stated.

He urged Nigerians to use the occasion to promote peace, unity, and patriotism, values Buhari consistently championed throughout his leadership.

The government also reiterated its directive that national flags be flown at half-mast from Sunday, July 13, in respect of the late president.

“The Federal Government extends its deepest condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians,” the statement added.
