By Anthony Ochela, Abuja

Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, Tuesday, described the late Justice Dan Abutu as a man of distinct character.

Speaking at the valedictory court session in honour of the late judge, Justice Tsoho said Abutu served with distinction as a judge of the court for nearly 21 years and as its chief judge for 18 months.

According to him,  “Justice Abutu’s demise has left a deep vacuum in our hearts and his absence weighs heavily on us all.”

The chief judge said Justice Abutu “lived a life that could be described as private but impactful. He left a legacy of extreme humility, joviality, kindness and compassion, always willing to extend a helping hand.”

Speaking on behalf of the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, Alkali Gasali (SAN) said Justice Abutu made indelible mark on the judiciary.

He noted that the late judge’s mark could be noted when he intervened on the issue of the Nigerian Law School campus in Lagos and if it could have multiple campuses.

He urged stakeholders, especially members of the Bench and Bar, to join hands with the ministry of justice to strengthen reforms in the judiciary.

On his part, President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Afam Osigwe (SAN) said Justice Abutu was a moral compass and defined the fine ideals of public service.

“He stood out for his intellect and his judgement was marked with clarity and a sense of the right being done,” Osigwe said.

Also speaking, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), who represented the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, said the late jurist was dedicated and honest.

Justice Roseline Ukeje said he was a man of very few words but known for his decisiveness.
