A coalition of over 200 civil society organizations under the umbrella of the Civil Society Groups for Good Governance (CSGGG) has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for nominating Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The group described the nomination as a strategic and commendable decision that reflects the President’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions and ensuring credible electoral processes.

According to the statement signed by the coalition’s spokesperson, the nomination of Professor Amupitan—an erudite scholar, legal luminary, and seasoned administrator—marks “a step in the right direction” following the expiration of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure, who served from 2015 to October 2025.

The coalition also commended the National Council of State for unanimously approving Amupitan’s nomination, noting that the decision underscores national confidence in his integrity and expertise.

“Professor Amupitan’s rich background in law, governance, and university administration will be invaluable in advancing electoral transparency and accountability,” the statement read. “We believe his leadership will further entrench the credibility of Nigeria’s elections.”

Professor Amupitan currently serves as a Professor of Law and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos. He is also the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University.

The group urged the incoming INEC Chairman to maintain the commission’s independence, promote fairness, and safeguard the sanctity of the ballot.

“INEC must remain impartial and focused on delivering elections that truly reflect the will of the people,” the statement added. “We extend our congratulations to Nigerians on this progressive development.”
