Chelsea have officially unveiled Brazilian wonderkid Estevão Willian following his high-profile transfer from Palmeiras — a move that may come back to haunt Premier League rivals Arsenal.
According to multiple reports, Arsenal were among the top European clubs tracking Estevão when he was just 17. However, in May 2024, Chelsea moved decisively to secure the teenager’s signature, beating out interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, and the Gunners.
Initially valued at £29 million, the deal includes performance-related add-ons that push the total fee to approximately £51.4 million. Estevão remained at Palmeiras until his 18th birthday, playing a key role in their campaign and notably scoring against Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Cup final earlier this year — a match the Blues narrowly won 2-1.
He now joins Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea first team and is expected to play a major role under the new manager, who sees him as a right-winger despite the player’s natural preference for a No. 10 role.
The transfer has sparked reactions from Arsenal fans, particularly in light of their recent £52 million acquisition of Noni Madueke — ironically from Chelsea. Madueke, who never truly made a lasting impact at Stamford Bridge, managed only 20 goals in 92 appearances before making the move to the Emirates, where he now wears the No. 20 shirt.
Some fans believe Arsenal inadvertently helped fund Estevão’s move by overspending on Madueke. The contrast between the two transfers has raised eyebrows, with many suggesting that Estevão, widely considered one of the brightest young talents in world football, could easily surpass Madueke’s record in fewer appearances.
Chelsea view Estevão as a long-term superstar, with comparisons already being drawn to Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. With the Blues continuing to build one of the most exciting young squads in Europe, Arsenal may soon rue missing out on a player many believe is destined for greatness.
