Mourinho in Tears as He Pays Tribute to Ex Porto Captain Costa

José Mourinho has delivered an emotional tribute following the death of his former FC Porto captain, Jorge Costa, who passed away at the age of 53. Costa, a legendary figure in Portuguese football, was instrumental in Mourinho’s historic Porto side that won the UEFA Champions League in 2004.

During a glittering career with Porto, Costa amassed an impressive 21 trophies, including eight Primeira Liga titles, the UEFA Cup, and the Champions League. He was also capped 50 times by the Portuguese national team. In recent years, he returned to the club he loved, serving as Porto’s director of football.

Tragically, Costa suffered a cardiac arrest at Porto’s training ground on Tuesday. Despite immediate medical intervention and being rushed to São João Hospital in critical condition, he passed away later that day.

Mourinho, visibly emotional while speaking at a Fenerbahçe press conference, described Costa as more than just a captain. He praised the former centre-back’s leadership, calling him a figure who commanded respect both on and off the pitch.

> “Jorge wasn’t just my captain—he was my leader, my extension in the dressing room,” Mourinho said. “He made things easier for every coach he worked with. He would’ve told me to keep going, to focus on my responsibilities. That’s what I’m trying to do, even in this painful moment.”

FC Porto president and former Chelsea and Tottenham manager André Villas-Boas also paid tribute to Costa, calling him “The Beast” and “an eternal legend of the club.”

“Jorge was admired by teammates and revered by fans. His loyalty, strength, and passion for FC Porto were unmatched,” Villas-Boas said. “He gave everything as a player and later gave up a promising coaching career to serve the club as a director. He died in service, working tirelessly in preparation for our next matches—just as he always did: with purpose, passion, and an unwavering will to win.”

Villas-Boas also shared a personal memory, recalling Costa’s support during difficult moments, including his brief move to Charlton Athletic and eventual return to Porto. According to him, Costa remained a guiding force in every role he took on, always pushing others to be their best.

FC Porto released an official statement confirming Costa’s death due to cardiac arrest. The club described him as “a symbol of FC Porto’s identity—embodying leadership, passion, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.”

“We mourn the loss of a true legend. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who loved him. We ask for respect and privacy as we navigate this profound loss.”

The football world has begun to mourn a man who defined an era for FC Porto. Jorge Costa leaves behind a legacy of strength, integrity, and unshakeable loyalty.
