The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has paid glowing tribute to the late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, describing him as a rare symbol of courage, compassion, and true humanity whose actions continue to inspire the nation.

In a statement statement signed by the President of CAN, Archbishop Daniel Okoh.on Saturday in Abuja, CAN said the late Islamic cleric will forever be remembered for his extraordinary bravery during a violent attack in 2018, when he risked his own life to shelter and protect 262 Christians from being killed.

According to the association, the Imam’s decision to stand for humanity in the face of grave danger transcended religious boundaries and reaffirmed the sanctity of human life.

CAN noted that the Imam’s heroic intervention did more than save lives, as it also strengthened interfaith harmony and restored hope at a time of deep national anguish. The association described him as a bridge-builder whose actions demonstrated the true essence of religion — love, compassion, and the defense of the innocent.

The Christian body recalled that in recognition of his exceptional service to humanity, Imam Abdullahi was honoured during CAN’s Sapphire Anniversary celebrations in 2021. It stated that while physical awards may fade with time, the legacy of the late Imam remains indelible and will continue to serve as a moral compass for religious leaders, communities, and future generations.

CAN further called for sustained public recognition of the Imam’s sacrifice, including continued engagement with his family, so that his story can be preserved and amplified as a source of inspiration for unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence across Nigeria.

As the nation mourns his passing, CAN said it also celebrates a life devoted to God and humanity.

The association extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Imam, his community, and all those whose lives were touched by his remarkable courage, praying that his legacy will continue to speak powerfully for peace where words alone fall short.
