Yobe state governor, Mai Mala Buni has called on the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, to monitor their database while issuing National Identification Number, NIN, to citizens and legal residents.
The governor made the call Tuesday when he received the management team of NIMC as part of the celebration of NIN Day 2025 at the Government House, Damaturu.
The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, disclosed that NIN is a single person and unique number that identifies a person for life, serving as the most authentic way to verify a person’s identity .
He emphasised the need for full registration of legal residents so as to have an accurate population and enable Nigerians have access to essential services.
He advised the management and staff of the commission to redouble their efforts and ensure that Nigeria has an authentic and reliable registration database.
He also pledged to support the commission with logistics to enable them visit all the political wards to register people.
In his response, the State NIMC Coordinator, Mr Zaman Yaksha informed the governor that September 16 of every year had been set aside to celebrate and create awareness on the importance of national identification registration.
According to him, the celebration includes a road campaign to educate the public, especially those at the grassroots.
He said recently, there was a directive from the presidency that all Nigerians must be registered with NIMC irrespective of their age.
“With the relative peace we have in Yobe, the commission is set to visit all the political wards in the 17 local government areas,” he added.
He commended the full support given to the commission by the state government in the discharge of its duty.
