British-Nigerian singer and songwriter Talay Riley has died after a fatal stabbing incident in East London, triggering a murder investigation by British authorities.
Talay Riley, born Mark Yinka Orabiyi, was reportedly attacked at about 9 a.m. on Friday along Pankhurst Avenue in Silvertown. Emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the attack, but despite their efforts, the 35-year-old musician could not be saved.
According to local reports, detectives from the Specialist Crime Command have commenced a full-scale investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.
In a statement released by the family, relatives confirmed the tragic passing of the acclaimed artist, expressing profound grief over the loss.
“It is with overwhelming sadness that we confirm that Mark ‘Yinka’ Orabiyi professionally known as Talay Riley passed away yesterday morning,” the family stated.
The family described Talay as a Grammy Award-winning and multi-platinum-selling songwriter and performer whose warmth, humour, generosity, and talent left a lasting impact on those who knew him personally and professionally.
They also expressed appreciation to friends, fans, and well-wishers for the support received following the heartbreaking news.
“We are deeply grateful for the enormous outpouring of love and support that we have received through messages, calls and visits over the past hours,” the statement added.
Talay enjoyed a successful career in the music industry that stretched over a decade. He secured a publishing agreement with Global Publishing at just 18 years old and later signed with Jive/Sony Records after appearing on rapper Chipmunk’s hit single in 2009.
Throughout his career, he earned recognition as a gifted songwriter and artist, collaborating with several major figures in the music industry and contributing to numerous successful projects.
His younger brother, renowned music producer Scribz Riley, paid an emotional tribute on Instagram, describing Talay as far more than a sibling.
In a heartfelt message, Scribz reflected on their final conversation and the devastating shock of his brother’s death.
“My heart is shattered! This doesn’t feel real. It feels like a bad dream. Just before he went to sleep we spoke about the future, staying positive and about everything we still had left to do. I never imagined that would be our last conversation.
“Yinka wasn’t just my brother. He was my mother’s son, a friend to many, a mentor, an inspiration, and a light in so many people’s lives. He had one of the purest hearts I’ve ever known. He loved deeply, gave freely, and touched countless people through his talent, kindness, and spirit.
“The outpouring of love already shows how many lives he impacted. You inspired so many people and your legacy will continue to live on through your music, your family, your friends, and everyone blessed enough to have known you. Thank you to everyone who has reached out to me and my family, we appreciate you all.”
The news of Talay’s death has sent shockwaves through the music community, with tributes pouring in from fellow artists, industry professionals, and fans.
Among those who publicly mourned the singer were Stormzy and Craig David, both of whom praised his talent and influence. Craig David previously worked with Talay on his 2018 album, The Time Is Now.
