Bauchi State government raised N12.34 million to support members of the Nigerian Legion and families of fallen heroes during the launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, AFCRD, and Emblem Appeal Week.
Governor Bala Mohammed made this known during the fund-raising ceremony yesterday in Bauchi.
Represented by his Deputy, Auwal Jatau, the governor emphasised sustained financial and moral support for ex-servicemen who sacrificed their lives and comfort to defend the country’s unity and territorial integrity.
The governor also announced personal and official donations from top government officials and institutions, with N1.5 million from him and his family, while the Bauchi State government contributed N2.5 million.
He said “the deputy governor donated N500,000, the speaker of the House of Assembly N250,000 while the chief judge and Grand Khadi gave N100,000 each.
“Judges and Khadis donated N50,000 each, members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly gave N50,000 each, while the Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, Head of Civil Service, State PDP Chairman and Principal Private Secretary donated N100,000 each.
“Commissioners and the Deputy Chief of Staff also contributed N50,000 each, Special Advisers and Permanent Secretaries N30,000 each, while chairmen of Local Government Councils donated N50,000 each, bringing the total sum to N12,340,000.”
Mohammed urged corporate organisations, wealthy individuals and the public to donate generously, stressing that support for legionnaires should go beyond annual ceremonies.
He assured that the state government would continue to assist ex-servicemen through employment opportunities, poverty alleviation schemes and other welfare initiatives.
The Chairman of Nigerian Legion in Bauchi State, Retired Captain Garba Itas, expressed gratitude for the financial support.
He assured that the funds raised would be judiciously utilised for the welfare of legionnaires and widows across the state.
Itas reaffirmed the legion’s readiness to support government’s efforts, particularly in security-related matters. (NAN)
