Suspected gunmen on Monday night launched an attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru, near Jos, Plateau State, killing three security operatives in what appeared to be an attempt to breach the country’s premier policy and strategic research institution.
According to sources, the assailants stormed the facility at about 11:40 p.m. and opened fire, prompting an intense gun battle with security personnel stationed at the institute.
A staff member of the institute, who spoke anonymously, said the attackers struck unexpectedly, forcing security operatives to respond swiftly to prevent them from gaining access to the facility.
The source disclosed that three members of the security team were killed during the confrontation. The casualties included two soldiers and a police officer attached to the institute’s security detail.
Despite the fatalities, security forces were able to repel the attackers and stop them from penetrating deeper into the institution, thereby preventing further destruction and possible casualties.
The motive behind the attack had not been established as of the time of filing this report.
A resident of Kuru, Bulus Haruna, said the attack caused widespread panic among residents of surrounding communities, who were alarmed by the prolonged exchange of gunfire that lasted several minutes.
Meanwhile, the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies has confirmed the incident and assured the public that the situation has been brought under control.
In a statement signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Department, Dr. Osime Samuel, the institute said there is currently no threat to participants, staff, residents, or facilities within the institution and that all scheduled activities are continuing normally.
“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.
“There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” the statement said.
NIPSS further disclosed that security agencies have commenced investigations into the attack to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The institute urged the public to avoid speculation and disregard unverified reports circulating on social media and unofficial platforms.
According to the statement, it would be premature to draw conclusions while investigations remain ongoing, adding that verified information would be released once it becomes available.
The institute also reiterated its commitment to the safety of its community and commended the professionalism and bravery displayed by security personnel who responded to the attack.
