The African Democratic Congress (ADC) senatorial flag bearer for Benue South, Dr. David Olofu, has called for the strengthening of democratic institutions and increased citizen participation in governance, stressing that sustainable development can only be achieved through accountability, inclusion and collective decision-making.

Speaking during a lecture on democracy and governance, Olofu said Nigeria’s democratic system must evolve beyond periodic elections to a framework that empowers citizens to actively shape public policies and hold elected officials accountable.

He noted that effective representation requires continuous engagement with constituents and the establishment of structures that give communities a meaningful voice in governance and development.

The former Benue State Commissioner for Finance stated that the challenges facing Benue South and Nigeria as a whole are surmountable through unity, purposeful leadership and institutional reforms.

According to him, democratic governance thrives when power is decentralized and citizens are encouraged to participate in setting development priorities and monitoring the implementation of government policies.

Olofu reiterated his proposal for the establishment of a Benue South People’s Assembly and People’s Council, which he said would bring together elected representatives, local government officials, traditional rulers, youth and women groups to deliberate on development priorities and influence budgetary decisions affecting the district.

He described the initiative as a practical approach to deepening democracy, strengthening grassroots participation and ensuring that governance reflects the aspirations and needs of the people.

The ADC candidate further emphasized the need for inclusive leadership, transparency and equitable distribution of development projects, pledging to champion policies that promote youth empowerment, economic growth, quality education, security and social justice across Benue South.

He urged political leaders at all levels to place the interests of the people above personal and partisan considerations, noting that democracy can only flourish where citizens are actively involved in decision-making and public institutions
