As the 2027 presidential race ignites, the ADC opposition coalition is moving swiftly to pair its newly minted candidate, Atiku Abubakar, with former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi for a formidable, landscape-shifting joint ticket, DAVID MAXWELL and JIBRIN NDANUSA write.
The race for the 2027 presidential election appears to be gathering momentum, with strong indications that former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, may emerge as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar following the latter’s emergence as the presidential candidate of the African
Democratic Congress (ADC).
Reliable sources within the opposition coalition disclosed to AljazirahNigeria that Atiku moved swiftly after securing the ADC presidential ticket, paying a private visit to Amaechi in a bid to persuade the former Rivers State governor to accept the vice-presidential slot on the joint ticket.
Recall that Atiku Abubakar had visited former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi at his residence in Abuja in what political observers describe as a major reconciliation move within the ADC barely twenty-four hours after the conclusion of the ADC presidential primaries, which produced Atiku Abubakar as the party’s flag bearer ahead of the 2027 general election.
Amaechi had earlier rejected the outcome of the primary, describing the process as flawed and alleging irregularities in the conduct of the exercise. However, addressing concerns after emerging victorious, Atiku Abubakar insisted the primary was not a battle between enemies, maintaining that “there is no winner and no loser.”
Sources within the opposition coalition say the visit is part of broader efforts to consolidate the coalition that brought together some of Nigeria’s most influential opposition figures under the ADC platform. “Discussions have progressed positively but are yet to be finalized,” an impeccable sources told this medium, while adding that “I however do not see any other more viable candidate to pair with Atiku.”
“Amaechi remains one of the most strategic political figures in the coalition. Atiku believes his experience, political network and national appeal would significantly
strengthen the ticket,” a source involved in the negotiations told AljazirahNigeria.
However, uncertainty still surrounds the position of Director-General of the presidential campaign. Sources say consultations are ongoing among coalition leaders, with various blocs pushing for candidates capable of balancing competing
political interests within the alliance.
Atiku’s emergence as ADC presidential candidate followed months of intense political manoeuvring and negotiations among opposition leaders seeking to present a united front against the ruling establishment.
The journey was anything but straightforward. Several influential figures within the coalition harboured presidential ambitions, creating a complex web of consultations, compromises and strategic calculations.
For months, coalition leaders engaged in behind-the-scenes meetings across Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and other political centres, seeking a formula that would prevent fragmentation and ensure the emergence of a consensus candidate.
Atiku’s supporters argued that his extensive national political structure, electoral experience and name recognition gave him a distinct advantage. Others, however, pushed for a younger candidate capable of projecting a fresh image ahead of the
2027 contest.
The debate generated considerable tension within the coalition, with different camps lobbying vigorously for their preferred aspirants.
Eventually, a series of negotiations and concessions paved the way for Atiku’s emergence. Party insiders say coalition leaders concluded that the former vice president remained the most viable candidate capable of mobilising support across Nigeria’s diverse political and regional divides.
On his part, Amaechi’s role within the coalition has attracted significant attention since the formation of the alliance.
A former governor, ex-minister and influential political organiser, Amaechi commands considerable influence, particularly in the South-South region. His reputation as a formidable campaign strategist and grassroots mobiliser has made
him one of the coalition’s most valuable assets.
Political observers believe his selection as vice-presidential candidate would serve multiple objectives, including strengthening the coalition’s reach in southern Nigeria while complementing Atiku’s political strengths.
Beyond electoral considerations, analysts note that Amaechi’s inclusion would signal the coalition’s commitment to accommodating major stakeholders who sacrificed personal ambitions in pursuit of a united opposition platform.
Despite the apparent consensus around an Atiku-Amaechi ticket, intense power negotiations continue behind closed doors.
Sources revealed that several political blocs are seeking assurances regarding key campaign positions, party structures and future governance arrangements should the coalition succeed in winning power.
The contest for strategic appointments, including the campaign director-general position, has emerged as one of the most sensitive issues. Various groups are reportedly lobbying to secure influence within the campaign hierarchy.
Observers say the coalition’s ability to manage these competing interests will be crucial to maintaining unity ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested election.
For now, attention remains fixed on the outcome of discussions between Atiku and Amaechi. While coalition leaders publicly project confidence and unity, the coming weeks are expected to reveal whether the negotiations culminate in the formal unveiling of what many insiders already regard as the coalition’s preferred
presidential ticket.
If current calculations hold, Nigeria may soon witness the emergence of an Atiku-Amaechi partnership, a combination that could reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
