AEDC Decries Alarming Energy Theft, Violent Attacks On Jikwoyi Officials

Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, has decried alarming cases of energy theft and a growing trend of violent attacks on its officials within the Jikwoyi community.

According to a statement signed by Azubuike E of the BM K1, Karu Business District, some highly placed individuals within the community have contributed to the problem by shielding offenders of the illegal acts.

AEDC called on community stakeholders to take proactive responsibility by sensitising residents on the dangers and consequences of energy theft.

“I write to bring to your urgent attention the alarming increase in cases of energy theft and the growing trend of violent attacks on Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, officials within the Jikwoyi community.

“These acts are not only illegal but deeply troubling, as they endanger the lives of AEDC personnel and undermine efforts to provide stable and reliable electricity supply to the community. Energy theft, meter bypass, and vandalism of electrical installations continue to have severe consequences, including poor service delivery, frequent outages, financial losses, and increased tariffs that ultimately affect law-abiding consumers.

“It is particularly disheartening to observe that some individuals in positions of authority within the community have, unfortunately, contributed to this problem by shielding offenders or using their influence to plead for those caught engaging in these illegal acts. Such actions weaken the rule of law and encourage further misconduct.

“In response to this growing challenge, AEDC has commenced strict enforcement measures, including weekend meter monitoring and coordinated night operations in collaboration with armed police personnel. These steps are necessary to curb the menace of electricity theft and ensure the safety of our staff.

“We, therefore, call on all community leaders and stakeholders to take proactive responsibility by sensitising residents on the dangers and consequences of energy theft. We also urge you to desist from supporting or protecting offenders, and instead work with AEDC to promote accountability, safety, and compliance within the community,” the statement read.
