Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has commended the Federal Government for suspending the planned increase in the National Examinations Council (NECO) examination fees, describing the decision as a welcome relief for Nigerian families and a boost to educational access.
The governor’s position was conveyed in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.
According to the statement, Yusuf made the remarks during the presentation of appointment letters to 4,900 newly recruited teachers for basic and secondary schools, alongside the engagement of 3,688 Abba Gida-Gida Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) Cohort V facilitators.
The governor described the Federal Government’s decision as a timely intervention that would ease the financial burden on parents and guardians while encouraging greater access to quality education across the country.
He noted that the suspension of the proposed fee increase would benefit millions of Nigerian households struggling with rising education costs and reaffirmed the importance of making public examinations affordable.
Yusuf also praised the administration of President Bola Tinubu for introducing reforms aimed at expanding access to quality education under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to him, the Federal Government’s education policies have continued to support efforts to improve teaching, learning and educational infrastructure nationwide.
The Kano governor further commended the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, for his leadership in the sector and acknowledged the contributions of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) toward strengthening basic education across the country.
He said both the minister and the commission had demonstrated commitment to promoting inclusive, accessible and affordable education for Nigerian children.
Yusuf also expressed appreciation for the timely release of UBEC counterpart funds, noting that the intervention had enabled Kano State to execute several education projects.
He explained that the funds had supported the construction and rehabilitation of schools, as well as the implementation of other programmes designed to improve the quality of basic education in the state.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, UBEC, NECO and other relevant agencies to deepen investment in the education sector.
He said the state government would continue working with federal institutions and development partners to improve learning outcomes and strengthen the overall education system.
Yusuf added that education remains one of the major priorities of his administration, stressing that investment in teachers, infrastructure and educational reforms is essential to the future development of Kano State.
The governor urged the newly recruited teachers to justify the confidence reposed in them through dedication, professionalism and commitment to delivering quality education to pupils and students across the state.
