Abia State governor, Alex Otti has urged residents to celebrate Christmas with gratitude, moderation and unity, while reflecting on the significance of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Otti said this yesterday in a statewide broadcast in commemoration of the Christmas celebration, in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
He cautioned against reckless behaviour, excessive alcohol consumption, speeding and violence, urging discipline and optimism for the coming year.
He said, “we are specially encouraged to be conscious of our choices this season.
“Our appetites and general scheme of activities should be measured, avoid excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages, speeding, undue aggression and any behaviour that smacks of recklessness or carelessness.
“Let whatever we do be moderated by the restraint of wisdom, bounds of discipline and the consciousness that there will be many more seasons like this in the years ahead”.
Otti thanked God for life and welcomed the people of Abia in the diaspora returning home, wishing them a peaceful stay and the full blessings of the yuletide.
He said the state government had improved road infrastructure, healthcare delivery, security, electricity, water supply and digital connectivity to ease movement and living across communities.
The governor described Abia as one of the safest destinations, assuring residents and visitors of adequate security during the festive period.
Acknowledging the economic hardship, Otti said government provided support packages for vulnerable persons and encouraged citizens and organisations to assist the less privileged in the state.
He urged residents to remember the sick, grieving and disadvantaged, stressing that Christmas is a season for compassion, sharing and collective responsibility.
Otti encouraged those facing hardship or loss to remain hopeful, noting that life offers renewed opportunities and strength for recovery.
He said the state government’s construction projects would continue during the holidays, apologising for inconveniences and assured that mitigation measures are in place.
The governor said emergency services would remain fully operational and responsive throughout the Christmas period.
Otti wished the people of Abia peaceful, joyous and blessed Christmas. NAN
