Former Governor of Sokoto State and serving senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja over alleged large-scale financial irregularities amounting to N189 billion.

According to a report, the former two-term governor, who handed over power in May 2023, is being interrogated over what investigators described as “fraudulent cash withdrawals” from state coffers during his administration.

Sources within the anti-graft agency indicated that the questioning relates to alleged diversion of funds, suspicious cash movements, and contract-related payments under Tambuwal’s watch. While the EFCC has not yet issued an official statement on the arrest, insiders say the probe covers transactions spanning multiple years of his tenure.

The development comes amid a wave of political reactions following claims by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that the EFCC’s recent actions target opposition figures.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party accused the commission of bias.

“Recent EFCC summons to senior members of the opposition coalition were politically motivated and linked to their political affiliations,” the statement read.

The ADC further alleged that some of the investigations being reopened are not driven by fresh evidence, but by files that had previously been closed or dormant.

“Some of the cases being pursued are not based on new evidence but involve reopening files from past years,” Abdullahi stated.

Tambuwal, who also served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2015 before becoming governor under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and later defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has long been regarded as a key political player with national influence.
