Reps To Strengthen Legislative Framework On Protection Of PWDs

By Paul Effiong, Abuja

House of Representatives Committee on Disability Matters has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen legislative frameworks aimed at ensuring effective implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.

Launching the Global Disabilities Green Initiative, GDGI, at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja Thursday, Chairman of the committee, Bashiru Dawodu said the Act is aimed at protecting the rights of over 30 million Nigerians with disabilities.

The lawmaker, who was represented by Moses Oluwatoyin, revealed that the Act had been in place since January 2019.

He lamented that despite its valid legal provisions, many challenges continue unabated, including discrimination and limited access to employment opportunities.

Dawodu also expressed his committee’s commitment to monitor compliance, ensure strict implementation of the law, as well as assess the effectiveness and plans to provide updates on its progress.

While commending the Founder and President of GDGI, Angelina Ugben, for her selfless efforts to promote disability inclusion and sustainability in Nigeria, the committee chairman noted that such initiative is in alignment with his committee’s goals.

He also lamented that despite laws moratorium which expired last in January 2024, some agencies are yet to reconstruct their building, to pave way for access to those with disabilities.

In her address, Mrs Ugben informed that the launch marks a significant milestone in her organisation’s mission to empower Persons With Disabilities, PWDs, through green economy.

According to her, the major objective of her initiative is to ensure that sustainability includes every individual, regardless of their abilities, gender and geographical location and skin colour.

The GDGI boss informed lawmakers of several progressive impacts made by her NGO since inception, disclosing that more than 50 trees of hope had been planted, while many PWDs had been trained and certified in solar and PVC installation and entrepreneurship skills.

She also disclosed that over 100 solar lamps had been provided for students in Bwari and Piwoyi schools.
