Abia Gov Sacks Chief Press Secretary

Date:

Abia State governor, Dr Alex Otti has sacked his Chief Press Secretary, Kazie Uko.

Mr Uko’s sack was confirmed on Wednesday night by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu.

Kanu, who disclosed that Governor Otti had appointed Njoku Ukoha as his spokesman, said the sack and appointment are with immediate effect.

The commissioner added that the governor’s decision to sack Ikoh was aimed at rejigging his media team.

Meanwhile, sources within the government hinted that Mr Uko might have been sacked on allegations that he had not been “combative” in his operation.

“That is (being combative) what they need here. If you are not attacking people, then you are not working,” one of the sources said.

Another source, who asked not to be named, said the former spokesperson was accused of frequently ignoring enquiries from journalists.

This is the first time Mr Otti would sack his appointee since he was sworn in as governor on May 29, 2023.

Earlier this month, the governor suspended the Commissioner for Health, Ngozi Okoronkwo, for “gross misconduct.”

He said the suspension of Mrs Okoronkwo, a medical doctor, was to pave the way for allegations of gross misconduct levelled against her to be investigated.

The governor did not give details of the allegations.
