A group within the All Progressives Congress ,APC, in Osun, Osun West Solidarity Forum ,OWSF, has called for zoning of the party’s 2026 governorship ticket to Osun West Senatorial District.
The group, during a news conference in Osogbo on Monday, said that the zoning would boost the chances of the party in winning the election.
Mr Taiwo Adejumo, the Financial Secretary of APC in Egbedore Local Government Area of the state, who spoke on behalf of the group, said that the zone should be considered for the ticket.
“If the former Osun Governor, Gboyega Oyetola, who is now the minister of Marine and Blue Economy, refuses to contest, the leadership of the party should cede the ticket to the zone.
“The minister has the right of first refusal. Our advocacy is conditional on his decision for 2026.
“We join other patriots to advocate for fairness by urging the APC leadership to zone the 2026 governorship ticket to Osun West Senatorial District, should Oyetola decide not to run”, he said.
According to him, since the return to democracy in 1999, the progressive party has governed the state for 16 years without the zone’s input, despite being the largest district by population.
“Despite our consistent support for APC, our district has been overlooked for governorship nominations.
“In the 2022 governorship election, Osun West contributed significantly to APC’s votes, even defeating the PDP candidate in six out of 10 local government areas.
“Of the 343,945 votes received by President Bola Tinubu in the state, 102,826 came from Osun West.
“We appeal to APC leaders, including President Tinubu, baba Bisi Akande, and Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, to consider the district’s appeal.
“Rewarding Osun West with the governorship ticket will not only reflect fairness, but will also strengthen the party’s progressive ideals in the state”, he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria ,NAN, reports that there had been agitations from different groups within the party for the zoning of the governorship ticket to Osun West Senatorial District.
