United States President Donald Trump has appealed to FIFA to return the FIFA World Cup to the United States in the future, insisting that the country should host the tournament independently rather than jointly with Canada and Mexico.
Trump made the remarks on Friday during a FIFA World Cup reception held at Trump Tower in New York ahead of Sunday’s final between Spain and Argentina, where he addressed FIFA President Gianni Infantino and celebrated the success of the ongoing tournament.
Speaking during the event, the American leader expressed his desire for the United States to once again stage the global football showpiece after the current edition.
“You should choose the United States of America again. This time we will leave Canada and Mexico out,” Trump said.
He further suggested that FIFA should award the tournament to another country before eventually returning it to the United States.
“Pick somebody else for the next one, and that will take some of the anger, hatred and steam out of everyone,” he added.
Trump also disclosed that Infantino had previously discussed another possible hosting arrangement involving both the United States and China.
“But Gianni also had another idea. He said we could do China and United States, so you have a nice short flight between games. The players would love that,” Trump said.
The next FIFA World Cup available for bidding is the 2038 edition.
FIFA has already confirmed the hosts for the next two tournaments. The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be jointly staged by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, while Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will host the opening matches to commemorate the tournament’s centenary celebrations.
Saudi Arabia has also secured hosting rights for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
According to FIFA’s continental hosting rotation policy, countries from North America and Oceania will be eligible to submit bids for the 2038 tournament, with the formal bidding process expected to commence in the coming years.
The United States is currently serving as one of the hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside neighbouring Canada and Mexico, making history as the first men’s World Cup to be jointly organised by three countries.
Trump’s comments come amid widespread praise for the successful organisation of the tournament across the three host nations, although he indicated he would prefer to see future editions held solely in the United States.
