Three people have been confirmed dead following an attack by suspected gunmen on Torok community in Rim District of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident, which occurred at about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, has heightened concerns over the security situation in the area and forced many residents to flee for safety.
The victims were identified as Ezekiel Zakka, David Yakubu and Dauda Habila.
A resident of the community, Albert Tok, said the attackers invaded the area and opened fire on residents before escaping from the scene.
Reacting to the incident, the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) condemned the killings, describing the attack as brutal and calling on security agencies to swiftly apprehend those responsible.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, on behalf of the association’s National President, Barrister Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, the group expressed sympathy to the bereaved families, the people of Torok community and the wider Berom community.
The association described the attack as another tragic example of the recurring violence affecting Berom communities, expressing concern that innocent residents continue to lose their lives while perpetrators remain at large.
BYM urged security agencies to launch an intensive operation to track down, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attack.
The group also appealed to both the Plateau State Government and the Federal Government to go beyond issuing statements of condemnation by implementing practical measures to improve security in Riyom Local Government Area and other vulnerable communities across the state.
According to the association, such measures should include improved intelligence gathering, sustained deployment of security personnel to identified flashpoints and the dismantling of criminal hideouts allegedly used by armed attackers.
The group further encouraged residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with security agencies by providing credible and timely information, and continue to uphold law and order.
It reaffirmed that every Nigerian has a constitutional right to life and security, pledging to continue advocating for justice for the victims, the arrest of those responsible and lasting peace across Berom communities.
