…Caution against over dependence on western powers

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Hon. Ahmed Satomi has caution African nations against over dependence on Western powers calling for unity of purpose to harness the continent’s vast human and natural resources for sustainable peace, development.
Speaking during the 8th Conference of the Network of African Parliamentarians for Defence and Security Committees in Abuja, Satomi call on African leaders to act with a unified voice and take ownership of the continent’s destiny.
The lawmaker stressed the need for Africa to reject the belief that it cannot thrive without Western influence, insisting that the continent has all it needs to succeed.
He warned that unless African leaders address critical issues like terrorism, food insecurity, youth unemployment, and industrial weakness, the vision of a prosperous Africa will remain a mirage.
During the event, Hon Satomi was elected as the new President of the Network of African Parliamentarians for Defence and Security Committees even as he pledged to use his office to promote and coordinate information sharing, and legislative actions to close Africa’s security and development.
He also emphasised the importance of collective efforts to reposition the network for the benefit of the entire continent.
While highlighting the Africa’s growing population and economic potential, Satomi noted that the continent’s GDP is projected to surpass global growth rates, with Sub-Saharan Africa expected to reach 4.3% growth by 2027.
However, he cautioned that Africa’s booming youth population poses both an opportunity and a challenge, as only 3 million formal jobs are created annually, compared to the 12 million youths entering the labor market each year.
Satomi underscored the urgent need to address the security-development link, stating that peace and development are inseparable.
He equally lamented Africa’s heavy reliance on imported goods, which he described as a lingering consequence of colonial influence, and urged African continent to embrace local production and self-reliance.
Reaffirming his commitment to strengthening Africa’s unity, Satomi promised to improve communication and information sharing among member countries to facilitate joint solutions to common challenges.
He stressed the need for African-led legislation and policies that reflect the continent’s unique realities and aspirations.
He also drew attention to the grave issue of food insecurity, revealing that 120 million Africans are acutely affected, with 80 percent living in conflict zones while calling on parliamentarians to push for laws that will drive Africa’s self-sufficiency and sustainable development.
The lawmaker also warned against the dangers of external interference, citing Libya’s collapse as a cautionary example.
The lawmaker concluded by highlighting Africa’s promising future, noting the region’s potential to become a leading global growth hub.
He also emphasised the transformative opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area and urged African leaders to embrace regional integration, innovation, and collaboration to build the Africa of their dreams.
