Lagos State Police Command has launched investigation into a viral video allegedly showing students of Excel College, Ejigbo, engaging in drinking of alcohol and smoking at the boys’ hostel.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, made this known in a statement in Lagos, yesterday.
She said the incident which occurred in April, but only surfaced online recently, had triggered widespread public outrage and condemnation.
According to her, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Olohundare Jimoh, promptly ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, to take over the investigation from Ejigbo Police Division, where the principal of the school had earlier been invited.
“The principal, who also serves as the proprietor, was invited for questioning and stated that the students seen in the viral video had already graduated and left the institution.
“Nonetheless, the school management is cooperating fully with investigators from the SCID to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“All parties are working collaboratively to ensure that such disturbing and inappropriate behavior does not recur within the school environment.
“Investigation is currently ongoing and the outcome will be made public”, she said.
The image maker called on secondary school authorities, both public and private, as well as parents and guardians, to take proactive steps in properly supervising and guiding their children and wards.
“They were urged to instill in them, the importance of maintaining good behaviour and upholding moral values.
“They should also guide them to avoid any form of misconduct or vices that may lead to public outrage or disrupt peace within academic institutions and the society at large”, Adebisi said.
The spokesperson assured residents of the command’s commitment to maintain peace, security and orderliness across the state. NAN
