The Republic of Korea (ROK) has committed the sum of USD 1 million to the International Committee on Red Cross, ICRC, to support the mitigation against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in North-Eastern Nigeria.

The Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency KIM Pankyu, on Wednesday stated in a meeting with his counterpart of the ICRC that Korea is deeply committed to supporting global efforts to combat gender-based violence.

He also mentioned that this contribution to the ICRC is a testament to Korea’s dedication to alleviating suffering and making a tangible impact in communities facing adversity.

The grant by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea reflects its ongoing commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts and addressing pressing global issues.

Existing collaborations between the Republic of Korea and the ICRC, through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Nigeria, have already committed 4 million USD to the ICRC for the purpose of supporting Primary Healthcare Centres in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States.

This additional funding will enable the ICRC to bolster its initiatives aimed at mitigating the impact of gender-based violence in one of Nigeria’s most vulnerable regions where people are severely affected by conflict and displacement.

This program includes providing essential support and services to survivors, medical and psychological support, legal assistance, and community outreach activities. Additionally, the initiative aims to enhance local capacities and foster resilience within affected communities.

In the meantime, the ICRC Head of Delegation to Nigeria, Yann Bonzon, emphasized that the ICRC remains committed to addressing the immediate and long-term needs of GBV survivors in North-East Nigeria.

He expressed gratitude for the support, stating that the grant from the Republic of Korea represents a significant boost to efforts in combating gender-based violence in North-East Nigeria.

Senegal Sets Up Commission To Review Oil, Gas Contracts

0

Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko officially set up Monday, August 19, a commission tasked with reviewing the oil and gas contracts the country signed with multinational corporations.

The PM made the announcement on national TV insisting that the team of legal, tax, and energy sector experts will work meticulously to make sure all legal aspects are carefully examined.

Sonko brushed off rumours of nationalisation reiterating his government’s ambition to rebalance the energy contracts in the national interest.

The move comes after Senegal became an oil producer. Australia’s Woodside Energy announced in June that its Sangomar oil and gas field had produced its first oil.

Gas production from the GTA project should also kick off this year.

It remains to be seen what the commission’s recommendations will be and in the event of negotiations if the expected changes can be implemented.

The move was a campaign promise of the Faye administration.

Iran’s hard-line parliament on Wednesday approved all members of reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian’s Cabinet, the first time in over two decades a leader has been able to get all of his officials through the body.

The approval marks an early win for Pezeshkian, a longtime lawmaker who found himself catapulted into the presidency after a helicopter crash in May killed his predecessor.

Getting his officials approved shows Pezeshkian picked a Cabinet of consensus with names palatable to all of the power centers within Iran’s theocracy, as opposed to going for controversial choices as well.

“Let’s join hands for Iran, for the people, for our country,” he said in Parliament.

Among those in Pezeshkian’s new Cabinet is Abbas Araghchi, 61, a career diplomat who will be Iran’s new foreign minister.

Araghchi was a member of the Iranian negotiating team that reached a nuclear deal with world powers in 2015 that capped Tehran’s nuclear program in return for the lifting of sanctions.

In 2018, then-President Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the deal and imposed more sanctions on Iran.

Pezeshkian said during his presidential campaign that he would try to revive the nuclear deal.

China Urges EU To Stop ‘Politicising’ Economic Issues As Trade Tensions Flare

0

China on Wednesday urged the European Union to stop “politicising” trade issues after the EU released a draft decision to finalize tariffs on electric vehicles made in China.

The EU’s draft decision on final EV tariffs made mostly minor modifications to the provisional rates announced last month.

Autos exported by BYD, the largest EV maker in China, would face a 17% tariff, while those from Shanghai-based SAIC Motor would be hit with the highest rate of 36.3%.

In Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning once again denounced the tariff plan, saying it was politically motivated.

The tariffs are subject to the approval of the EU member states. A final decision must be made by early November, four months after the July 5 effective date of the provisional tariffs.

At the daily briefing, Mao said China was “seriously concerned” about a reported approval by the Biden administration of a secret nuclear strategic paper with a focus on China.

The classified paper passed in March underscored China’s rapid expansion in its nuclear arsenal which would soon compete with that of the US and Russia in terms of size and diversity, according to an American media report.

Separately, Mao pushed back against Taiwan President Lai Ching-te’s criticisms of China’s “military aggression” in the seas surrounding Taiwan at a forum Wednesday.

Mao also commented on a report that Beijing began requiring Hong Kong-based foreign consular officials to seek Chinese authorities’ approval ten days ahead of their business visit to the Greater Bay Area, including Macao and southern Guangdong province.

Without confirming the report directly, Mao said foreign consular officials should obtain China’s “consent in advance” if they planned to visit areas outside their consular district for business purposes according to the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

Hong Kong media said the new rule could complicate the diplomat’s business visit since they would be asked to explain the reason for the trips, the personnel, times and venues involved, and any department that foreign officials plan to visit to get the permit.

WHO Mobilises Response To Resurgent Mpox Outbreak In DRC

0

Resurgence of the Mpox virus, also known as monkeypox, is now a concern for many countries, with several cases reported across multiple regions.

The Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, has been the epicenter of this new resurgence. So far, at least 18,000 cases have been reported in the DRC, with at least 500 deaths attributed to the virus. Over 70% of the cases have been reported among children.

Amid the ongoing insurgency in the DRC, the World Health Organisation, WHO, is working to ensure a proper response to curb the spread of the virus.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Samuel Boland, the incident manager for Mpox at the WHO Regional Office for Africa, said they are adapting new strategies to reach even the conflict-hit regions in the DRC as part of their response to the resurgence.

“We can use things like the radio to reach people who might otherwise be difficult to access by foot. We have already begun the process of mobilizing a large network of personnel across the DRC and other Mpox-affected areas, who are already on the ground and ready to support the Mpox response in these very difficult and hard-to-reach areas,” said Dr. Boland.

The DRC hopes to receive vaccine doses to address its Mpox outbreak by next week, according to the Congolese health minister on Monday. The WHO stressed that the vaccines are urgently needed.

“DRC will be receiving the first doses of the vaccine in just the next couple of weeks. The key thing to remember is that it’s not vaccines on the tarmac that we need, it’s vaccines in the hands of the key populations that need them, and of course, those who want them. We’re already working very hard with member states and partners to develop national vaccination plans so that as soon as those vaccines arrive on the ground, we can distribute them to the people who need them as quickly as possible,” Dr. Boland added.

The outbreak in multiple African countries prompted the WHO last week to declare Mpox a global health emergency.

The WHO emphasizes that prevention mechanisms might be the most effective way to curb the spread of the virus.

“The best way to ensure prevention is to build knowledge and understanding. People need to recognize the signs and symptoms and know how to prevent transmission from one person to another. It doesn’t necessarily require vaccination to stop transmission; it simply requires people to uphold public health and social measures, such as avoiding physical contact with others if they are sick,” Dr. Boland said.

The latest update from WHO reassures that this is not another COVID-19.

Kumuyi Urges Love Between Christians, Muslim Faithful

0

General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, William Kumuyi, has called on the Christians and Muslim faithful in the country to love and live in harmony with one another.

Kumuyi, made the call on Monday night in Port Harcourt during a Global Conference organised by the Change Makers International, CMI.

Kumuyi, who is the Founder and Convener of CMI, said that the conference, with the theme, “Driving positive change and social impact, was to bring the consciousness of the people to becoming change agents in Nigeria.

Speaking on “The call and the commission of a change maker”, he outlined the response and responsibility of a change maker with reference to Luke 10:39.

He also listed the role and roles of a change maker, the rule and reign of the Almighty change maker.

Kumuyi said: “We should respond to our responsibility to love our neighbours as was commanded by God.

“Lift up your neighbours, assist and care for them”.

He asked: “How do we say that we love God when we don’t care for our neighbours?

“Who are our neighbours? Christians and Muslims are our neighbours.

“We are created by God, we have the same father, we have the same flesh and blood that runs through us.

“Christians and muslims should give one another a sense of belonging.

“Our neighbours are not only those who are in the same religious faith with us.

“We should help each other”, Kumuyi said, adding that people should help to pay their neighbour’s child’s school fees, if they have.

“We should have compassion for our neighbours as change makers.

“The need of our neighbours that are in pain, crisis, or sick should be important to us than where we are going.

“Think through life, if you are in a painful situation like your neighbour, what would you like your neighbour to do for you.

“Do to others what you want them to do for you”.

“Call your neighbours together, and while you are talking with them, give them food, if you have, before you start preaching to them the gospel because Jesus christ is a well rounded person who understood who his neighbour was”, he said,

Kumuyi advised Nigerians to understand their neighbours and do to them as Jesus Christy did to the multitude who came to him (Job 29 to 17).

“If you are not a hearer and doer of the word of God then you are not righteous (Matthew 25 to 43).

“Don’t look at religion or tribe, look at everyone as Jesus Christ did and do good to them (Rev 7 :9 – 17).

“We need to help and save people who are in trouble.

“We should not rule over people but we have to be servants for our people and allow God to be the ruler (Psalm 146:10).

“We need to be inventors, our lives should be attractive to others.

“Teach everyone how to become better, be a man, a woman available to lift people and make a change.

“Be you doers of the word and not hearers only deceiving your own self”. NAN
