BY ANTHONY OCHELA, ABUJA

A Federal High Court in Abuja has turned down the request to stop the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from conducting its planned Local Government and State Congresses in Kaduna state.

The Court also rejected another plea to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from monitoring the conduct of the Congresses aimed at electing new officers for the party at the local governments and state levels.

Justice Peter Lifu declined to stop the elections while delivering ruling in an ex-parte application brought before him by six aggrieved members of PDP In Kaduna state.

The Judge after hearing the arguments of the aggrieved members through their lawyer, Mr. Affis Matanmi held that their prayers for restraining orders against the conduct of the Congresses cannot be granted and subsequently refused the request.

However, the Judge advised the party and INEC to stay further action in the matter having become aware of the pendency of the suit against them.

The suit marked FHC/ABJ/CD/1144/2024 was instituted by six plaintiffs who claimed to be card carrying members of the party in Kaduna state.

They are Sheu Isa Dan Ina, Mutari Shuiabu, Yusuf Suleiman, Nura Waziri, Malam Mansur Alasan and Jaafar Abubakar.

PDP, PDP Kaduna state chapter and INEC are the 1st to 3rd defendants respectively in the suit.

Meanwhile, Justice Lifu has fixed August 27 for hearing in a motion on notice for interlocutory injunction of the plaintiffs.

Serving Senators Earn ₦21m Monthly, I Got ₦13m, Says Shehu Sani

0

Amid the controversy over the monthly earnings of federal lawmakers, Senator Shehu Sani has maintained that he received N13 million as a member of the 8th Senate, while current members of the 10th Senate receive N21 million monthly.

The revelation by the former lawmaker, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, followed the stance of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) that Senators earn N1 million each.

Sani, who spoke on Channels Television’s Lunchtime Politics on Wednesday, insisted that the RMAFC is being economical with the truth.

He said, “I was a Senator and I believe I had correct knowledge about what actually happened at that time and I believe is what is happening now. Well, RMAFC was just playing with figures, they were specific in saying this is the salary of Senators and then they went on to give a breakdown of N20 million which they said was what every Senator earn in four years.

“But I think they are being economical with the truth and I think I understand their fears in terms of telling the truth when they know what is actually happening.

“Before I came to this interview I was going through the papers and I saw a statement credited to one of the Senators from Kano, Distinguished Senator Kawu Ismaila, who confirmed what I said about Senators particularly of this set receiving up to N21 million monthly.

“During my time, I was in the Senate and I was pricked by my conscience as an activist who went to the Senate to unveil what has been made secret for over two decades.

“I believe that taxpayers and Nigerians in general have the right to know how much their legislators are earning and how much they are actually been given. I went on as a serving Senator then to disclose what I do receive monthly, what is credited into my account at that time and it was 13.5 million.”

The former lawmaker said he does not believe there is any need to deceive Nigerians or cover up anything.

He said that since legislators receive public money, it is necessary for those involved to come out and say it as it is like he did.

The commissioner said the state government had concluded plans to commence renovation of 300 secondary schools in the state.

Akindolire noted that the renovation of the classrooms was part of efforts to ensure that facilities were readily available for a conducive learning environment for pupils and students in the state.

He commended UNICEF for taking the bold steps in proffering workable solutions to the menace and securing the future of Nigerian children.

“We are putting necessary measures in place to reduce the out-of-school children in the state.

“Although the percentage of out-of-school children in the state is not that much, at the same time, we can still do a lot to reduce it to the barest minimum.

“Presently, the state government has commenced comprehensive renovation of schools as a way of providing enough classrooms as well as conducive environment for students.

“Also, we are recruiting 1,000 teachers in the primary schools and also 1,000 teachers in the secondary schools to boost the number of teachers in our schools,” he said.

Also, the Majority Leader of the state house of assembly, Mr Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, said that combating the menace of out-of-school children in the state was important.

Ogunmolasuyi, who was in company of the House Committee Chairman on Education, Mr Kolawole Ologede, said the stakeholders’ meeting was an eye opener to the fact that government needs to do more to tackle the menace.

“For us to be here shows that the future of our young ones is very important to us.

“It is important for everyone of us to make sure that we do the needful to reduce the number of out-of-school children.

“I know that we cannot eradicate this menace overnight but it is a gradual process, and I know that whatever we are able to put in place today will achieve a lot,” he said.

In his remarks, the Officer-in-Charge, UNICEF, Lagos Field Office, Mr Muhammad Okorie, said government and stakeholders in education sector must develop workable models to protect child’s right to quality education.

Okorie also said that the menace of out-of-school children must be tackled in Nigeria. (NAN)

Hoodlums Stole Documents On Corruption Charges Against Ganduje, Family – Yusuf

0

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State said yesterday that miscreants looted documents on the alleged corruption charges against his predecessor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, his family and aides.

Yusuf recalled that Ganduje has been facing alleged multiple charges before the State High Court.

This was contained in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature.

According to him, the governor made the disclosure when he paid an on-the-spot assessment visit to Kano State High Court that was vandalised by thugs during the recent nationwide anti-hunger protests.

Bature quoted Yusuf as lamenting,” It is unfortunate that enemies of Kano State hired undesirable elements to vandalise one of the historic public buildings.

”This was with a mission of averting corruption charges against  Ganduje, his family and aides.”

The governor said the miscreants destroyed virtually all the units of the court, including the office of the State Chief Judge.

He added that about N1billion was lost through the theft of office equipment, destruction of facilities and other relevant materials crucial to the dispensation of justice.

Yusuf urged the youths in the state to desist from being used by detractors to engage in violence.

”Instead, the youths should concentrate on skills acquisition for a better future.

”The state government will not relent in securing the lives and property of the people of the state,” he said.

Yusuf said the judiciary as the last hope of the common man must be protected at all costs.

He also directed the rehabilitation of the building with immediate effect and the deployment of adequate security for effective justice delivery.

He commiserated with the state Chief Judge, Dije Aboki and the entire judiciary over the ugly incident.

Yusuf urged them to brace up to cover what was lost in the court’s proceedings for the benefit of the common man.

He commended the people for their support and cooperation to the present administration in the state.

Yusuf prayed that the gesture would be sustained for the peace, stability, prosperity and economic development of the state.( NAN)

Count Us Out Of #IgbosMustGo Slogan – Lagos Indigenous Group

0

By Our Correspondent

Some Lagos indigenes under the auspices of De Renaissance Patriots have warned against linking them to the ‘Igbo must leave Lagos slogan’ promoted by some faceless individuals.

The group, which described such campaign as shameful and irresponsible, also condemned a report describing it as a far-right socio-cultural organisation, saying such a claim is unfounded.

It emphasised that it would not back down in the mission to rescue indigenous Lagos from marginalisation, lamenting that deliberate policies to dominate them had been implemented by non-natives ruling Lagos.

According to the group, the writer of the report was ill-informed about their antecedents, noting that facts are available to prove their position.

In a statement by its media office, the group insisted that the report was also wrong to have stated that their ideas conformed to the group instigating ethnic crisis in Lagos.

The statement read: “We take an exception to the tag of far-right on De Renaissance Patriots Foundation. As a socio-cultural group of very senior eminent citizens of Nigeria that have been culturally and constitutionally blessed with indigeneship of Lagos State, we consider such uncharitable, wicked and unguarded use of vulgar language as unacceptable.

“That vitriolic name tag of the far-right on these very responsible citizens does not show sensibility on the members of De Renaissance Patriots Foundation. We are not far-right in ideological description.

“It is a vitriolic name identity which blemishes our moral, social, intellectual and political struggle in ideological terms as a right-wing association. We are not. The ruling elites in Lagos State, whom we suspect are doing the hatchet job, belong to a formative association of narcissists, who have seized the state for themselves, family, and friends.

“The writer got his historical information and its linkage with Obafemi Awolowo wrong. If he could not understand what the outcome of the Constitutional Conference in London in 1952 was, we would avail him the details at the appropriate time.

“It is a shameful and irresponsible act to link the faceless hashtag #IgbosMustLeaveLagos (Lagospedia) with De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, a highly responsible and respected socio-cultural organisation in Lagos. The organisation has, among its objectives, promotion of our social and cultural values, encouraging such factors that afford the citizens and, in particular, the natives of the state, to partake fully in the affairs of their own state.”
